Hi everyone!

I am new to this site (although have been lurking for a good while :red!) and wondered if anyone would be able to give me some advice please?

I have 2 lovely boars who live together very happily! One of them is, lets say very well endowed, but a couple of days ago we noticed he has a round white scab type thing on one of his testicles rolleyes Poor little boy! The area around the scab is red and slightly swollen. He is in perfect health otherwise, eating more than ever and still as naughty as normal! The scab doesn't seem to be hurting him and he doesn't even flinch if I touch it. Does anyone know what it could be?

Thank you for your help!

Sorry I haven't a clue what it could be - I've never come across this before but when Nemo had a sore underneath him a few weeks ago with lying in his urine because he had gone off his back legs - I used sudocrem all around that area and it healed him up nicely.:)

I would sek vet advise asap.It may(hopefully just be a sore) but it could be an abcess ,and abcess in the scrotal area is serious.

thank you for your help.

I took him to the vet yesterday and she thought it was a skin infection, possibly from sitting in urine or the other guinea pig licking him :{ She gave him an injection and I have to give him Baytril twice a day for a week. The other guinea pig is being so sweet with him at the moment, I think he knows his best friend is a little poorly! :))

Hi

What did she inject him with? For skin infections guinea pigs don't usually need an injection, unless she thinks he has mites too.

Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure what she injected him with, she just said it was an antibiotic. The poor little boy's squeal as she did it though is something I never want to hear again!

He had mites when we first got him and he doesn't have any of the signs he had before. I'm confused now as to what the injection was for!

When my piggie had an ulcer on her foot pad the vet injected her with antibiotic as the top kept coming of it and it would bleed so I wouldn't worry about the injection too much.

Don't worry about the injection. I was just wondering if he was giving your piggie Ivermec which is the drug used for mites. Quite often vets will give Ivermec even though this won't help a fungal infection in the slightest. Some don't seem to be able to comprehend that they are two completely different skin problems.

Are you able to post a pictice of the scabby area then I can have a look for you and see if any of our rescues have had similar?

Please excuse the personal picture but say hello to Barney! In the middle of the red swollen bit of his left testicle is where the white circular scab was until the vet pulled it off. It looked a little bit like a big verruca. I think you can see that it is very red and swollen, and there is dried blood from where, I think, she pulled it off. I've attached a more beautiful picture of him and his buddy Jim too.

The other thing that I haven't mentioned yet (sorry, quite important but we only found out after I first posted!) is that just before I took him to the vet we cleaned the hutch out fully and found two white wormy things under the vetbed. I told the vet about it (I got an emergency appt as soon as I saw them) but she didn't think they were anything to do with it and it was just a skin infection. The worms weren't actually near the pigs but underneath the vetbed, but it is still a concern. Being warmer weather we have had more flies around than usual and I did wonder if the worms were to do with that. Cue lots of flypaper in our house now!

Thank you very much for all your help, I really appreciate it.

Hi

It's quite difficult to see from the picture.
Personally I would recommend emailing Chrissie from gorgeousguineas.com and ask her which items she considers to be best healing such a delicate area. She might simply recommend aloe vera gel which will help the healing process but if it is some kind of skin problem and not just a sore your piggie might need a lotion such as neem gel or Lavender & Myrrh lotion.
If you describe the sore with as much detail as possible in your email she will be able to advise the best route and will email you back or call you today with her advice.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I hope Barney gets better soon.

The two wormy things you were referring to could have been lice. Like Martha and Maud said contact Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas and I think they do a shampoo.
