Say 'no' To Wire Bottoms In Cages

Thanks for your information! I know that cages with wire bottoms are fairly common in the humid and warm Asian countries; if ventilation is wished for, there are now much more foot-friendly plastic alternatives available.

Thankfully, they are not being sold here in Europe and the US.

Yes, I noticed some whilst looking online for a new hutch and it disgusted me, so I thought it should be mentioned. :-)

Just looking at it makes my feet feel all weird! I wouldn't like to stand on that so why should my Piggies?!
Ta for the information! :)

I know! Some sellers are very naive!
Your welcome!

Actually, I bought a small animal run in a cheap shop (B&M bargains, I think) just like the one in your picture, and it had mesh on the bottom. We assumed it was meant to stop a rabbit digging out of it? But we assembled it without the mesh, as it was far too small for a rabbit anyway and we wanted it for the piggies.

Thanks, your information will definitely be useful to guinea pig owners when buying runs!
I would never put my piggies on this sort of run.

Good job for leaving the mesh out :)

Just wanted to say, if anyone has a wire bottom in their cage (something like this):

TAKE IT OFF (if possible) OR BUY ONE WITHOUT IT ASAP!
It's for you piggies' health and safety. Wire bottoms are one of the highest causes of Bumblefoot: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bumblefoot_(infection)
Thankyou
I used to have a cage like that but it didn't have the wire flooring. I totally agree, it could really injure a guinea pig.

Yes, those cages are fine, I almost bought one, but it's just the wire bottom that ruins the whole thing

In general I disagree with wire floors, however wire can be used if turf is rolled over the top and allowed to grow this then makes the run fox proof as they cannot dig in and nothing can dig out in the case of rabbits that is very handy to prevent. Wire proper care and consideration wire can potentially be a positive, sadly average Joe will probably not go to that effort.

That's actually a really good idea! - as long as the whole floor is turfed, because especially where I live in Oz, there are a lot of snakes. :)
