right.... so i seem to spend a small fortune on wood shavings...
and I'm concidering going to fleece...
is the fleece thing just a fleece blanket...?
or is it more complicated with like an absorbent centre or something...?!?!

so..... if i could have the pro's and con's of fleece.... what would they be...?
are they easy to wash and dry...?
do they smell...?

hmmmmmm.....
x

Its polyester fleece and the urine wicks through it...it depends on what you use underneath as to the smell, I use inco pads and the smell is not noticable for 5/6 days. You need to poop scoop every day though.

Easy to wash and drys very quickly..mine dried in 30 minutes on the line yesterday. You can get cheap fleece on ebay and the cheap shops like BjM.

thankyou... :)

i think i'll have a look at the rag market then... for some nice fleecies... :)

how many sets do you think i'll need per cage...?

I did use megazorb but it was just far too much mess and I find fleece so much more practical. I just use fleece throws (either from Primark or Ikea) with old towels underneath. I find that their pee soaks through the fleece and is soaked up by the towel underneath leaving the fleece dry. I can honestly say it doesn't smell at all. I completely change the fleece and towels every 3/4 days (not because of the smell but because the corners have started to get too wet). They are easy to wash; I just put everything in the washing machine although I make sure hay etc has been completely shaken off. I don't have a garden so it's a bit of a nightmare getting the extra towels dried but the fleece dries extremely quickly. My boys absolutely love it and I wouldn't go back to using another kind of bedding. I've heard of people using absorbable pads underneath their fleece but towels work ok for me as I only have 2 pigs and they are in a 3x4 c+c. Only disadvantage of fleece is that you really need to spot clean 2/3 times a day ideally as, unlike megazorb etc, there is nothing to hide any mess.

My friend uses sawdust and it is in her house everywhere. It's impossible to get out of everything. She's looking at using fleece like she did before except that that clogged up her washing machine, well her mothers one at least. Someone told her after that if she puts it in a pillow case or something it keeps all the bits in it but still gets washed? Not sure if that's right or not.

Thankyou hun x)

I have 3 fleeces and they have cut into 6 large pieces.

depends on how big your cage is.

brillient...
love the idea with the pillow case...!

with the saw dust and how my cages are set up... the mess is unbeleiveable and with a 2 year ole little boy aswell... it gets walked through my entire house...!
i'll show you how my cages are... and you'll see what i mean...

You will need 3 large fleeces and cut them in half so you have one set in use and one spare :)

I have 3 tiers too and 3 fleeces work good for me one in use one in wash.

I use a duvet cover to wash my fleece in ever since I had to pay for my machine to be unclogged. This does mean that I can wash less each time as it needs more room to move about in the cover to get clean.
Fleece does take commitment though and doesn't suit everyone. It's worth trying one cage with a cheap fleece before you spend too much money. I have a big c & c on 2 levels and with beds, etc it takes 3 loads of washing each change.

:)

If you're wanting cheap fleece just to try it out Primark do large fleece throws for £2.50 and the light blue ikea fleece that you can find on Amazon in my nearest Ikea was down to 99p last week. Both of these are big enough to fit very large cages.

The floating cages of the future are here - today.

My friend got one from Dunelem mill, it's light pink with cupcakes on.

I use a duvet cover too- I've got Asda fleeces which are £2 each I think, I've got brown as it doesn't show the poops as much, but am fancying a change to bright green in my new cage. I use Asda toddler disposable bed mats underneath but am going to get a washable mattress topper instead now I finally have my C&C set up.

The fleece in dunelm do bright green :)) it's a lovely colour all of them are very vibrant i was soo tempted to buy them all (except mushroom lol) when i was there earlier

This week's fleece wash is in my machine as I type. I used to use shavings then heard about them causing health problems. Then I changed to cat litter, which is just as messy as shavings. Now I use cat litter with fleece on top (always used newspaper as liner too). I have 2 piggies in a Nero 4 cage. I have 3 fleece blankets. I find I need to change it about half way through the week because it gets damp in the corners. Then I have a 3rd fleece blanket so when I put the 2 from the week in the wash there's one ready to go in. I take the blanket out once a day and shake it in the garden over the flower bed to get the poos off. I clean the whole cage, change newspaper, cat litter etc, once a week. Wondering about towel under the blanket though after reading other people's comments. My current set up doesn't smell at all and looks tidy. But all that cat litter seems wasteful. How often do towels (under fleece) need changing?

Just to let you all know that if any of you fancy splashing out on some top quality fleece I sell it by the metre (1.5 metres wide) for £7 including postage. I know it sounds pricey, but a metre weighs nearly 500g so it's expensive to post.

It is very good quality, though, and will last years with regular washing.

See my website www.cavycozies.com All profits to rescues and sanctuaries.

i've just got some fleece blankets from asda... :)
and some bed pads to go under... just to try out... and i only have like 3 towels... lol
i'll post pics of how i get on... :)

I just use newspapers under my fleece and that has been fine. I put all of my hay in litter trays and the piggies do lots of pees and poops in there.
