Sallys been in today for x rays and urine tests after a few weeks of weeing on herself with no difference on a low dose of metacam.

Urine- has blood and protein- now being treated for a uti.

Xrays- no stones in the bladder but in my vets words her knees look terrible. (She hasn't seen knees like them). She's going to show them to the exotic vet Thursday but she's also sent the x rays to a vet who does orthopeadics for second opinion as well as referral for laser therapy and given a higher metacam dose. I'm off to pick her up now. She said on the phone the weird thing is that where there's normally like a pad or layer of cartlidge it looks like bone is growing there. Has anyone experienced this please?

Healing wheeks required for my poor Sally!

I am very sorry about the bony growth. My mum has bone growing in one of her toes - despite her being 80 years of age. It is not quite common but it can happen.
Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do in guinea pig apart from painkillers and glucosamine; knee replacements (which is what you'd have as human) are not an option. :(

All the best with the UTI. If the problems are not solved with antibiotics or recur after the ABhas worn off, then you are more likely dealing with a sterile - i.e. non-bacterial cystitis (better known under its old name IC or interstitil cystitis), which is charcterised by a lower than expected count of faecal bacteria in the urinary tract; a total absence of them is rare due to the fact that the scent gland is located directly in front of the genitalia when it is rubbed over the floor for territorial scent marking (which all piggies do).

Thankyou 💖 that is interesting to know about the bony growth! We still have room to increase her metacam dose if necessary and also paracetamol has been suggested as an add in if the new treatment plan doesn't appear to be helping :)

I have had a couple of ic piggies previously, I did have good success with cartrophen and a very high metacam dosage. I forgot to ask about it this time but I believe it can help with her joints too so I may ask about this if we need additional options in the future :) it has been a while since I have given glucosamine supplements will cystease be okay for both bladder and joints please?

I've given her a big cuddle now she's home and she's taken her meds really well 🥰 she is in need of another bum bath once I've picked the small humans up from school!

Sending loads of healing vibes to little Sally, hope she is feeling better soon
