Hi, over the winter I am going to be building hutches for all my pets to keep me busy. I am *touchwood* hopefully going to be getting a bigger shed and doing the garden etc over the next year, and was hoping to build some new hutches to put in it.

I have 3 rabbits who live seperately and Tom & Jerry who live together. I'm wanting all the hutches to be the same, the size I'm building each of them is 2x5ft (they will each be in the run at least twice a week.. I'm building that too. So much work!.. but hopefully they'll be in it more than that, I'm going to try and make the run split into two so there can be two outside at a time.. I'll stop now before I confuse you all ;))..

Anyway so I really wanted to ask, was, what woods are safe to build the hutches with? (Also, if you have any recommendations of where to get the wood (in the UK) that would be even better!)

Thankyou! :)

I think ply would be easiest to work with to make a hutch - atleast 6mm thickness.

Here are a few pics of my hutch:

We literally just made a box with legs, middle divider and a roof with a little overhang and used a jigsaw to cut out the doors.
We cut out the mesh section first and then cut the border out from the front.

The mesh is from an old fire guard. It is getting rusty though, so I will have to replace that soon.

Good luck with your hutch, it so rewarding when you see the finished article!

The hutches I'm building are 4ft8inch x3ft, and I need to build 4, so the plywood is quite expensive.. Right now, I'd be better off buying four hutches almost the same size from pets at home, but those ones are 4ft11inch, so therefore too big for my shed.. is there any other *cheaper* wood I could use?

Is pinewood safe? :)

What about for the middle part, where they'll be gnawing on it, what's safe for there?

Thankyou again x
