I went to the vet today with Chuck because he was itching SO much and losing hair. The vet scraped his skin and found no mites, so she guessed it was mange mites. (She said she didn’t want to go digging in his skin because he’s so squirmy.) She then prescribed us with a treatment called selamectin which on the box said it was for puppies and kittens under 5 pounds. Is this safe? I would think the vet would’ve prescribed ivermectin..?

@Ruby Fawn Selemectin is something I've heard of from Guinea Lynx. I believe it's used by some piggy owners in the US. Ivermectin is the common treatment over here in the UK.

If you Google it, the Guinea Lynx antiparasites page should give you more information.

Okay, I’ll look. Thanks.

My vet once prescribed Penny with something that the label said it was only meant for dogs. I called her and she explained that it's okay for piggies but the company just doesn't want to put money into saying it's okay for piggies, or something like that. If in doubt, call the vet and ask. There's no harm in asking :)

Metacam is for dogs and cats, piggies and other small animals can have it though. Some meds are safe for different animals, just doesn't say it on the bottle!
Def good to double check though!
