Hi all, sorry for not being active and just asking for help.

My piggy speedy had his back teeth done and for the life of us we could not get him to eat (he was fine before the vets) and sadly even after informing the vets we lost him :( . we still have his brother and spoiled him since but its like his just realizing his brothers not coming back and has been feeling sorry for himself but still loves his outing and loves.

I'm just asking since the vets seems to not want to talk on if anything went on that they did not tell us, would i have to get him a friend soon as i know they need to be in groups or pairs and i don't want my little boy to get depressed as i've lost enough this year.

I’m sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately vets aren’t trained in guinea pigs dentals and sadly a bad dental can make a piggy worse. The vets havent necessary done anything wrong but they may simply have not had the expertise to deal with it. You haven’t added your location to your profile, but what I can say is that there is only one vet in the Uk who is trained to do dentals

they are usually ok on their own for a few weeks but he will need a friend sooner rather than later. They do get lonely if they are by themselves and are usually ready for a friend much sooner than we are ready to get them a new friend.

do be aware that as your piggy is a boar, he cannot be in a group with other boars - he can be with one other boar only (more than two boars together results in fights) or you can have him neutered, have his six week wait and ghen bond him with a sow(s). The best way to find him a new friend is via dating at a rescue centre As it allows piggies to choose their own new friend which results in a better bond. if you get a new piggy from a pet shop, for example, then you won’t know if they will have compatibility so they may not bond. In that case, they would need to live in separate cages but side by side for interaction through the bars

Hi

I have added my location now, i had him done in white vets, wolvo way as it was the closes as one of the members here recommended them, all was good with his other dentals but this one he just stopped eating but drank, we took him to the vets by us as he died in my sons hands and they said about his jaw so i rang up white vets who was meant to ring me back but got nothing from them and its been 4 weeks now. We tried everything to get him to eat, normal food to recovery.

I was thinking that but having to bond them and make sure they get on is my worry as we only have the space for one home and run till we move house. we have been thinking of a soe has he never got on with his brother much but they would sleep together and eat together but boars attitude was there but not to the point of separating them.

That does sound good but i did read getting the snip can make boars attitudes worse and this is why we never got them both done, they was both 4 years old.

neutering a boar does not change their behaviour in any way. all it does is prevent pregnancies. it won't make his attitude worse and it wouldn't have had any effect on their relationship either - it wouldn't have made them get on any worse or any better

Thank you for this information, it is strange that books i've read have behavior problems after the snip in them, they might want to fact check them as we was going for the snip on both but read they could get worse after it.

I will have to look if there is a rescue near me that is clean to see if if they have any soes in just to be on the safe side.

If he’s not neutered you won’t be able to take him dating for a sow. Do not discount a boar pairing. If they are compatible (and most importantly Chet to choose each other) then it should work out.

What you call ‘boar attitude’ is normal and just dominance behaviour rather than an attitude.

All the best.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, much as we try, sometimes there just isn't a happy outcome. I've lost a pig to a dental abscess issue, I know it's hard. ((HUGS)) to you!
