Hello,

One of my lovely Boars had to be PTS on Saturday :(

His cagemate has been alone now for over a week - he is eating, and squeaking when I go into the garden. He's been going in his run every day as usual, and munches on the grass....He seems "OK".

With Guineas being herd animals, I wonder what signs I should look out for to tell me if he's very lonely/sad. We're making sure we spend lots of time with him, but can't be there 24 hours..I keep wondering if I should find him another cage mate - He's about 4 now?

Thanks in advance xx

awwww poor thomas, i think the response will be yes to a cage mate, could you take him boar dating?

I did that when Thomas' brother Troy died, but that rescue has closed down now, and I can't seem to find any local to me.

When Troy died, Thomas was quite clearly really upset - wouldn't eat and just sat gazing out of his cage. He doesn't seem as sad this time, though I'm sure he would prefer to be with a little friend...

Might see if Google can find me a nearby rescue xx

Ahhhh poor little fella, sorry for your lose :(. I don't know what to look out for but obviously the main things are to watch his eating and drinking. Unfortunately I'm going through a similar thing and I've noticed Miss Piggy isn't as vocal anymore and is being a lot more selective with her food so sometimes you've just gotta look out at the little things to see how they're grieving.

Good luck with the boar dating, make sure you get some pigtures up if you do get another :)).

You could try putting a Teddy in for snuggles until you get a new piggie, that's what we've done and she loves it :D.

Sorry for your loss too :(
Are you going to find a friend for Miss Piggie?
I'm going to search out a teddie in the morning :)

I would definitely have a go with boar dating. We had the same thing hapen to us in June. For the first few days I thought Wallace seemed okay but then he stopped eating most stuff and would just sit in his tunnel and do nothing all day and then the weight started coming off so I was getting really worried. Rocket brought him out of himself - he perked up, started eating, started moving ( yay! ) again and generally seemed to give him a second lease of life.

THis is lovely - we have a potential dating session on Thursday at a local rescue!

Thanks everyone xx

Best of luck! I hope that Thomas can find a friend he likes and gets on with! You will be amazed at the sudden change in him once he has companionship again; it is as if he has come to life again!

PS: I am so sorry for your loss. We have a Rainbow Pet section if you would like to post a tribute and share your grief.

Thank you - I have posted in the Rainbow Bridge section and received some lovely replies. We are so, so sad about Bubbles :(

THomas has some "dates" tomorrow at 2pm, and I hope he can find a new friend.

More help please!

Hello, I just wondered if I can ask for some advice again...

I've been browsing the forums this morning, and found a thread about GP lifespans...Thomas is now 4 and a half years old - so he's not a young boy. I'm just wondering we would be better off bringing him indoors, where he will get a lot more interaction/cuddles, or still looking to pair him up with another GP - (We're due to go to a rescue this afternoon and the lady said most of her GPs are around 12 months) My worry is that we get a friend for THomas, and then something happens to him....Surely we will all eventually be left with a lone piggie?

Ah...I worry about my pets so much!

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Thomas has a new friend

His name is George but my daughter has renamed him Gary the Guinea Pig (Poor thing). He is very, very lovely...

I had a long chat with the lady at the rescue re keeping him on his own/finding him a friend due to his age - she said to try him and see how he is. We put them in a run together for about an an hour... So far, they seem to be OK - there's been a bit of mounting, lots of chattering and the odd bit of teeth chattering so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Just cutting them up some of THomas's fave food so hopefully they can bond over some food.

Thanks for all your advice and support

:)
