Reggie has had a course of Baytril for a runny nose. He is fine in himself, eating fine, drinking fine, pooping and weeing fine. Vet said breathing was clear and not rattly. Runny nose is only from his right nostril and it’s always clear and never been green/yellow. It looked like it had cleared up after the antibiotics (it’s been a week since the course finished) but it’s back again. His brother Chunk is fine and is not showing any similar signs. Should I take him back to the vets and get them to send off some swabs? Tried to get a photo or two but the little monkey never sits still!

Hi! How long a course of baytril have you been prescribed, and has your vet considered an irritation in that nostril or a secondary issue with rhinitis?

The vet gave him a 7 day course which we finished. She did say it was a little odd that it was only the one nostril and said she could take swabs and send them off if the antibiotics didint clear it up. I’m hoping to get a new batch of hay this weekend (they have the same hay as my horses) as the hay they currently have is last years.

I would consider with your vet that it can take longer than just a week to week to clear a URI or whether there is an irritant in the nose. We have recently had several cases where piggies were left with just one runny nostril.

I might ring the vet tomorrow and have a chat, see if she thinks it’s worth trying another weeks course maybe? If it’s just the case that he’s just going to have a runny nose then I can accept that, I just don’t want to leave it and it develop into something worse :( I'm worried how delicate little piggies can be :(

Please always contact your vet again if an ongoing treatment has not cleared the matter completely.
Then it is time for either another round or for the vet to consider alternative issues. Any good vet will always firstly treat for one of the potentially lethal problems if there is the least suspicion for that before they will look at other options. We can only show you potential avenues to pursue with your vet and help you ask the right questions, but we are neither legally allowed not qualified to diagnose online. ;)

No, I really appreciate your help, it's nice to have backup from people in the know! I checked him over last night before bed and again this morning and his nose seemed clear and dry!

I will try and speak to the vet who saw him the other week and see what she thinks :)

Quick update :- managed to get in at the vets this morning, saw a really lovely vet who said she was pleased that his breathing was clear and he was bright and his teeth looked good. To be on the safe side he has been put on a 10 day course of Baytril and Loxicom. She thinks that it could possibly be that there is something up his nose as she can’t understand why it’s only the one nostril that’s snotty. So fingers crossed that will do the trick, he’s had his first doses today and was so good taking it from the syringes

Hi I just wondered if this cleared up after the second round of antibiotocs? Thanks, Natalie

It did eventually clear up yes :D I’m still not entirely sure what caused it but it hasn’t come back so fingers crossed that’s the end of it!

My Christian had a runny nose from one nostril a while back. The vet checked his lungs and they were clear and his breathing wasn't rattly. Turns out he had a blocked tear duct. A course of metacam did the trick and he hasn't had problems since. Pleased that Reggie is better.

This sounds similar to one of my pigs now who has one nostril runny (clear). We have changed his hay keep at scented candles and air fresheners away from him. He had a week of metacam from the vets last week but it doesn't seem to have changed. Going back this week.
The vet said she was reluctant to give antibiotics straight away because there were no signs of infection but we could try that next. She also said she'd like to check inside his nose but that this would need some sedative. Do you think the antibiotics did the trick @Reggie&Chunk and I should try those first. Sedative doesn't sound too good to me. How did they check for the blocked tear duct @Betsy ?

I can't remember @ChloeP this thread is nearly 3 years old. And Christian is now at The Rainbow Bridge so I can't even ask him if he remembers either!
