One of my girls (Oreo) is constantly making the rumbling sound towards Bugs as shes grooming her and apparently Bugs finds this comforting because instead of shying away from her Bugs gets closer and closer to her where they are nuzzled up to one another really close.

With guinea pigs, what does the rumbling mean and how is it comforting to some and to others, they are scared by it?

I'm afraid I will need a little more information. Wiebke is this site's real expert on sows but it sounds like they're displaying dominance behaviour.

I'm more of a boar person (we have two guys) but if this were two boys I'd say it's not friendliness but posturing and dominance.

Anyone with more experience with sows?

Sorry I can't help more

Its more as she's approaching her that it starts and then it continues as Oreo begins grooming, It continues until Bugs is cozzied up next to Oreo with her nose touching hers.

I think it's all part of the dominance thing, even with sows there is always one more bossy than the other :) One of my girlies used to rumble at the other, but then snuggle up & wash her face :)) maybe it's also just their way of saying "look it's me your friend" & thus identifying themselves to the other one? Sounds like they do love each other lol!

I kinda find it weird though because Bugs just cozzies up when Oreo is making that sound. I think she finds it comforting. Those two are never far from one another, it occurs at the strangest moments, then the grooming and snuggling. Oreo will even rumble when Bug's nose is touching hers and then close her eyes and sleep with Bugs like glue next to her. Its cute and I enjoy hearing that though :))

I have sows and mine make that nosie. Although it is most common with sows when they are bonding together, it also happens between happily bonded sows.

It is really a way of just reminding the others that they are the boss. They may often stretch while doing it and mine do it just after they have been cleaned out and has never meant that they would fight.

Sometimes, it happens when one guinea pig is trying to cuddle up to another when they really want to be left alone.

This noise is normal with guinea pigs and can even occur during play.

Hope this helped. :))
