Hi, me again with my two female piggies.
Piggydad and I have noticed today that Piglet, our babypig, has been rumble strutting and wiggling her bum at Biscuit (3+years old - unknown).
I am so confused as Biscuit has been the dominant one since we brought Piglet home, but today Piglet has been all over her.
She seems to be sniffing Biscuits bum while rumble strutting and wiggling her bum. Biscuit does not care for this and sends her packing, shooing her off with her nose every time or fake-nipping at Piglet - but she does not give in. Piglet will run away from Biscuit’s shoo, but goes right back to attempt again.
I just don’t understand what’s happening, I thought baby automatically goes to the bottom of the rank?
I even triple checked her flower because I was thinking could she be male the way she keeps going for Biscuit’s backside, but no she is 100% female. :hmm:
Please can someone explain this to me? I’m not sure I understand Piggy Politics and I’m not sure what’s normal and what I should be taking action with?
I did take a video but didn’t realise it’s photo uploads only it seems.
Thanks a million. Xoxox

How old is your youngster? It sounds like she may be coming into season or her teens. This is totally normal. It doesn’t necessarily mean she is making a play to be dominant piggy, but once babies become teens, they can get their own ideas on the hierarchy! It doesn’t sound like you have anything to worry about though. You don’t need to take action at this point.
Sows: Behaviour and female health problems (including ovarian cysts)

Hi!

It sounds like your little girl is coming into season. Rumblestrutting, especially in teenage girls is not uncommon when they experience a stronger spike of hormones. you have obviously got a feisty little one!

@Piggies&buns has given you the link to our sow behaviour guide; it deals with seasons and typical behaviours you have to expect. You should find the guide very helpful!

PS: This forum is run entirely by voluntary member donations; we are all members giving our best for free in our free time, from the bottom to the top. Unfortunately a video upload would require more bandwidth than our budget allows.
You need to upload your video on a public setting elsewhere and then copy it into your post.

Thank you so much for the link, and all your advice. I feel better having it confirmed, it just makes me uneasy sometimes watching them work it out you know.
I’m not sure how old she is to be honest, she came from pets at home as we couldn’t find any single pigs to adopt right now - we adopted Biscuit but she always was a single piggy. She was the smallest in the herd they had there but they didn’t tell us how old.

Thank you so much for all your advice. She definitely is a ball of fire this one! I’ve been watching her and no matter how many time Biscuit forces her away she comes right back shaking that booty.
I completely understand understand about the video service, it’s an incredible forum. I just wondered if it was me being technically challenged not seeing a way to do it. :D
Can I ask, how long does this hormonal phase last for typically?

A season should be over in a day or two but sometimes a hormone spike or a challenge to the existing hierarchy can last longer.
It very much depends on the piggy; some sows can be very hormonal during teenage while with others you'll never notice when they are in season.
If you want to get an idea how a full-on season runs, have a look at this guide here. it features some videos I took over the course of a very strong season: When Sows Experience A Strong Season (videos)

Oh amazing, thank you so much honestly. I will read through that right now! She is so flipping sassy it’s unreal, nice to know it’s normal though. They were just bonding nicely and sleeping together and she’s woken up today on the wrong side of the bed. :D

Sounds very typical for a season to me! The good news that the shared experience and the shared excess of emotion will help to deepen the bond. Your older girl knows better than you what the little one is experiencing. Most sows are actually very tolerant of other sows being in season, including some major humping.
