Hi folks,

the girls are getting more relaxed in their homes a bit but we are looking at creating a run floor that isn't as wasteful as newspapers on top of plastic sheet with carefresh and hay on top in the pigloos and carefresh in the pee pods that they seem to like to use.

I got 2 big microfiber bath mats (I.e. no looped material to cath feet in) with rubber backing, I washed them without softner to get rid of any manufacturing chemicals etc and placed them in the run with a newspaper area for hay and food\water.

They seemed to love it this morning as even Smudge the very wary one was popcorning about at morning veggie time.

However I have placed newspaper under the pigloos to absorb any pee accidents and I will use carfresh for inside the pigloos so it absorbs the pee rather than just newspaper, but I wondered about pee in the mats, do I need to wash the mats every day or would it be every 3 days if they don't pee on it much?

The are happy with their hutch, as I spot clean pee and poo areas (they have 3 corners they use almost exclusively!) and it gets a complete change and wipe down every 5 days which they go mental for, running about and playing while I tidy the run near them hehe.

I just don't want to cause them harm but I am also aware I am going through a ridiculous amount of bedding\hay that is very wasteful and I may be overdoing it.

Its a learning curve but I want the girlies to be happy :) as they spend about 7 hours in the run a day before cuddle time and hutch for night.

cheers folks

I am using up old bath mats for my own piggies; they love them. The only problem is that the rubber will disintegrate with repeated washing.

Cool, I was worried that they may soak the fibres and then get urine burn, but its not like I will have them sitting in it for days, I am a bit OCD and like to ensure they are clean and happy....(I had spare time once hehe)

I am also looking into vetbed with newspaper below and the poly sheet underneath.

The bath mats are about £8 each from TK Max and are pretty big so 2 of them covers 2/3 of the 6x3 run :)

I use the rubber ones more for roaming time. The really old rubber-less mats make much beloved pads on the top of the fleece or vet bed...

Thanks, that gives me some ideas re: non rubber bottomed ones with vet bed below them. Its a learning process :)
