Took the girls for their yearly health check and the vet suggested that short spells on hard/rough ground would benefit their claws.( Neither girl needed full trims) Her reasoning was in the wild they would encounter rocks etc however she added that i need to be careful their pads don't become sore. So would an hour on a brick patio every few weeks in the summer help ?

I dont really know, but at a college i was at working, i see that the guinea pigs in the animal welfare room had their hay pile surrounded by bricks layed flat in a square, must have been to help file their claws down. They put it two bricks wide so that the pigs cant jump over it

I lpthink this would work best, because you are forcing the guinea pigs to have to go over rough ground to get to the hay, without having them on it permanently.View attachment 110746

I have heard people using upturned tiles under the water bottle so that piggies wear their nails when having a drink
Tiles are smooth, might work though. Def less harsh on the feet skin.

Edit. I'm thinking of slate

I never have to trim Bill and Ted’s nails during late spring, summer months as they have a ramp in their “bunny ark” which has lats and roofing felt on it for grip and they use it all the time. Winter months are different, their nails seem to always need cutting which is a nightmare, they have black nails!
