Ron & Reg
New Born Pup
So as I mentioned in my intro, poor Ron has been really poorly, which is what brought me here. Apologies in advance for the long story.
It started when we were away at the end of June and the pigs were staying with our lovely boarding lady. She always sends pics and updates but it was unusual for her to call. She was letting me know that she had found some blood in the cage and identified it coming from Ronnie. She booked and took him straight to the vets, who promptly gave him a 1ml shot of 0.04 Metacam and 5 days of Baytril.
The following day we returned home and all was well for 10 days when I found pink wee on a towel. So then registered with a vet (wish I had researched and done this before it was an emergency!) and got in the same day. Long story short, but over the next 2 weeks, 6 trips to the vets and several hundreds of pounds down - it seems Ron had some blood clots in his bladder. These showed up on the scan and X-ray - the vet showed me and explained that because you could only see the white “spots” on one side and not from the top or other side, it was unlikely to be stones, as these would show like the skeleton does at all angles. So 2 weeks of Sulfatrim - 0.36 twice a day and 0.4 once a day Loxicom for dogs.
Towards the end of the second week Ron quickly and physically went down hill - hunched up in the corner, not eating or drinking and looking really rough generally. He weighed 1.220 kg when starting the Sulfatrim and weighed 0.980 kg by the end and was resembling a hamster.
So thanks to your guide, I mushed up
Pellets and ordered critical care and syringe fed him which he fought and resisted every step of the way! With each passing day that he was off the AB’s he improved ever so slightly and very slowly his appetite returned. Last night he weighed 1.049 kg
I was late to the game with the probiotics! So wish I had been advised to give him this alongside the AB’s. I didn’t start until his lowest point but I think it has really helped. I have been sprinkling a small pinch on some cucumber each day for 10 days now. Question - should I continue for a while or stop this now he is eating normally?
So I am hoping and praying literally with gritted teeth that the ordeal is over. We are away again at the end of August, so a bit anxious about that. I have gathered all the vets notes etc to take with him just in case.
Thanks for reading and I welcome any advice, comments, observations and especially any similar stories from others.
