Hooray!
We went back to the vet who gave RJ the shot for a follow up and once again, she was no help. For some reason I let her talk me another injection, although I felt badly about doing it. She confessed she had never heard of Ivermectin Shampoo, and throughout the whole thing she seemed rushed and unsure of herself, several times referring to pictures in a book saying, 'Yep, thet's what it looks like.' Looking at the scab on his back, it suddenly hit me that it was in the same place that she scraped his skin...
After getting home, I still felt no more reassured as to her behavior, so I called around and found another vet that handled piggies and gave them a call. After a brief conversation, we decided to bring him in for an impromptu visit and the difference was night and day. This vet seemed surprised about the injections, and informed me that the only problem with the Ivermectin shampoo was that it was only sporadically available here in the states and is technically illegal to ship from overseas. She talked to RJ, spent all the time in the world with us, even though we were walk-in customers without an appointment, and even helped my daughter hold RJ after it was over (wrapped in a towel) to comfort RJ, which it seemed to do.
She did give us an alternative shampoo to use, DETAILED instructions on how to get rid of the mites on him and in his cage and answered every question I had, no matter how much she must have been rushed. Quite a lovely person... :smitten:
So, RJ is on the mend, and though he is still pretty ticked off at me (he still runs into his house when I come around), things are looking up. His hair is even growing back...
