I've read that birch branches are perfectly fine for guinea pigs, but being overly cautious and not knowledgable in the least about trees—does this imply that river birches, too, are okay?

@The Foord Piggies There are actually a lot of species of wood that are unsafe. Some that come to mind are cherry, pine, cedar, maple, chestnut, and citrus woods; I know there’s plenty more, though, too.

@Lily & the Boars I’m actually unsure about river birch. I know white, grey, and silver are safe but according to my list all others aren’t. In my opinion I’d steer clear.

I agree with @Robin; I have never come across river birch before. If in any doubt, please stay off.

@Robin_ Thank you. Do you know anything about crape myrtle? Finding information about this on the internet is very difficult. I've seen that it's non-toxic for cats, dogs, and horses—I don't know if it applies to guinea pigs.

I think if you can’t find information here or on the internet (be careful about what you agree with there) then it’s best to err on the side of of caution and not feed it.

I don’t know about it but hopefully someone else will.

There is unfortunately not enough research and experience around; hence the lack of information.
Again, if in any doubt, please stay away and do not use it. ;)

@Robin_ : Could please post a link to the resource you are using for the poster to check for themselves what is safe?

Here’s the link (apologies if you have rules about posting links to other forums):

I believe the most detailed list stems from a post on a gerbil forum.

According to it myrtle is unsafe. But, in a nutshell, not a whole lot of dedicated research is done on this sort of stuff, so take it all with a grain of salt.

@Robin_ Thank you for retrieving that list. I'll look for woods that I can confirm are safe in the future for my piggies.
