Hello all,

As you probably are aware, around 9 months ago I was in a very difficult situation where Fudge was rapidly loosing weight, but putting up a fight. I spent a lot of money on trying to diagnose what the “abnormal mass” was in her stomach area. I tried needle aspirations and scans, but nothing was coming back conclusive. The needle aspirations came back with a lot of “dead cells”. When they did the needle aspiration and she was relaxed, he had a good feel of the area and said the mass was a lot bigger than initially thought and seemed to go further round the area?

The vet gave me a few options, to operate and see what it actually was, but he said he wasn’t confident and alot of stars would have to align, but he would of given it ago. I was stuck weeks on end deciding what to do with her declining so rapidly.

One morning about 9 months ago I went into her room and she was on her side breathing very laboured (couple seconds between each gasp) and slowly passing away from me. I got my family to sit with her and reassure her as she was going and I had to go to work. 2 hours later she passed away and I was told while at work. Till this day I still wonder if it was an abscess that could have been removed or just a normal lump that wasn’t cancerous or something, did it pop and that’s why she was dying slowly and breathing her last breaths for 2 hours? The vet was pretty pretty sure it was cancer, but he was very honest and wasn’t 100 percent sure on that. I just hope she wasn’t having a painful death if it was an abscess and that morning it had popped or something? The piggies I have had have never passed away on me like this. One had a heart attack out the blue and the other was put down with a growth on her face which affected her quality of life and the vet told me it was time so I agreed.

I miss her so dearly and it’s taken me 9 months to write this as she passed away on me a few days or weeks after my last thread for advice on the whole scenario.

Why was she on her side gasping for air (dying) for 2 hours. Does that happen when they go or was it an abscess that horribly popped? I’d never forgive myself. I tried all I could to get her better, but with the results and vets unsure and not confident of the operation with her being so underweight she probably
Could have passed during the operation anyway.

Anyway, I miss her dearly and I have uploaded a picture of her cremated in a box which sits above my bed. Over the rainbow bridge my Fudge.

Very sad. You did your best and your vet gave you his honest opinion. Guinea pigs are so small and fragile it is really difficult to know what the underlying issues are a lot of the time. Popcorn high over the bridge little Fudge 🌈

So sorry for your loss, Gadzy! Sending lots of love. Glad you came here to post and get support. Grief is so hard!

I’m so sorry for your loss.

My piggy Pepper passed away with a tumour. I decided not to operate and keep him comfortable with pain medication. He passed away peacefully laying on his side. Breathing heavily. Sounds just like Fudge’s passing. The end sometimes isn’t as quick as we’d like.

Please don’t blame yourself. You did all you could and you’ll never know exactly what the lump was.

Fudge had an amazing life with you. Remember all the wonderful times you had.

Take care ❤️

Thankyou everyone! I appreciate it massively.

@weepweeps yeah, she was on her side breathing heavily, almost like gasping? Is this what happens if their just naturally slipping away? I only ask because I’ve never had a pig pass away this way. Each time it’s a little different depending on the situation with the pig I guess :(

Yes. This sounds like a very peaceful passing.
