Hi,

We recently bought a couple of guinea pigs for the first time(noddy and snowy). At home we noticed noddy had some suspect patches on his nose , eye and a big bald patch on his back, we took to back to the pet shop and to their in house vet that diagnosed ringworm we have been given some ointment to apply for 21days. I would like to know if the snowy will get it as well. We have a young daughter and although she is not allowed to touch noddy she really loves them both already (same as me and her dad) we would hate to have to take them back. Needless to say we are really annoyed at the petshop for letting him get so bad and not giving him a proper health check before selling him. Also although they both have great appetites they do not drink much - should I be concerned about this? any advice would be very much appreciated.

thanks

If Noddy has it Snowy will too!
what are they living in as that will need treating to?
also when touchng the guinea pigs make sure you wash your hands afterwards as you could pass it on
So sorry you had this happen espescially at the arival of the new guys
i'd definately complain strongly to the shop and get them to pay for the treatment for the poor chaps
Send ing heaing vibes for the guys x

If you have concerns about them not drin king enough, give them some extra water via syringe.Gps that do not drink much are prone to renal problems.

Hi Jackie, welcome to the forum :)

I agree with what has been said above. Do you know what treatment you were given. Not all vets are GP savvy and someone on here could definitely confirm if you have been given the right cream. Also I think Ringworm (not fungal) can be passed on to humans?

How much do they drink? I know that mine drink little from their bottle because I always run all their veggies under water and don't shake before feeding so they get a lot of water from this.

Snowy probably will get it if she hasn't alreasy. Ringworm is a fungal infection and make sure you wash your hands after treating them and make sure your daughter doesn't touch the piggies and children are more prone to it. Its not very pleasant, I caught it off one of my piggies when I was 9 as I didn;t know what it was and touched it before telling my mom . . . it was itchy lol

You won't need to take them back, just treat them, and you may find its so itchy for them that they make themselves bleed, mine did anyway. Just bathe the wounds in saline solution. It will go away and its not life threatening unless its like majorly bad, and a few patches isn't too severe.

As for the drinking, how big are their water bottles, my 3 year old piggy currently drinks between 200 and 350 ml a day, depending on how hot it is. Seeing as these two are bound to be younger they won;t dirnk too much yet. When my pigs were babies they didn't drink much, however they did drink. Also if you are feeding them lots of water bases fruit and veg like cucumber and melon they won't drink as much because they will be getting fluid from those.

aww poor lil piggies, i caught ringworm from one of my friends guinea pigs..its horrible and can be a pain to treat, i was on tablets and cream because mine was quite bad i only had one place that it was on luckily, my friend had a few on her back and neck i think. took creams and tablets to get rid of mine it was quite bad.

just be really careful and wear gloves when handling, always wash your hands, and clean anywhere your piggy goes, if you need to hold them change your clothes afterwards.. its that easy to catch, and not a nice thing to have.
