My 10 year old son has come out with a lovely red ring on his face this morning. We've popped down to the pharmacy for some cream. I've not noticed anything on the piggies yet, but they're booked into the vet to be checked on Monday, as they are the most likely source. I've read the information here on Ringworm, and I've not got any F10 - is that the best option? Is it sold in shops, or is it an Amazon job? Anything else I can get hold of quickly?
Thanks!

F10 is great for cleaning cages for ringworm. I bought mine from hyperdrug.

I would keep your son away from piggies currently just incase they pass it backwards and forwards. When my pigs had ringworm you could see it on their ears and a little bit round their eye. Not a ringshaped like humans but white mark that lost fur.

Your vet may stock it, if they are close enough to get to, maybe phone and ask.
Alternatively, online vet suppliers stock it - probably a safer bet than amazon

Hi

Poor you! What a nightmare for you. Ringworm spores can be passed on just about by any pet, playmate or picked up from the environment. :(

Ringworm is only contagious when you see acute ringed spots that produce the spores (in dark skinned piggies you usually only see the crusty exudate forming over the fungal area). Have a good look at your piggies. However, if you cannot find any signs of active ringworm on your piggies then they cannot have passed it on to your boy. They may however have been infected if he has handled them with his own acute ringworm.
Ringworm starts typically on the face/ears but if shed spores are the cause then acute spots can appear anywhere else on the body where they have been picked up from the bedding during scent marking or sleeping or transferred when mounting. In humans you get typically get in areas we touch or scratch regularly without thinking.
Ringworm: Hygiene, Care And Pictures

I would however recommend to keep your son away from your piggies for the time being so he cannot pass it onto them. The time between infection and acute outbreak is 10-14 days. Please thoroughly wash your hands before and after touching your son and your piggies so you are not indirectly passing on spores yourself - either way.
Contagion - Inter-species transmission and pet care during owner illness/pregnancy (incl. Covid)

F10 is best got online. The concentrate lasts ages and comes in handy in lots of situations, not just with your pets. It has also served me throughout the pandemic while shielding my husband. All you need is an empty spray can or bottle for the diluted solution.

I am sorry to hear your son has ringworm, I remember my daughter bringing it home from school when she was 4 and desperately trying to stop her from touching it and then touching every surface in the house! We did manage to confine it just to her luckily. We currently have a young guinea pig with it, at least he's restricted to his own cage. I have found the forum guides are extremely helpful in dealing with it.
I've found a company called Fab Finches who sell F10 products www.fabfinches.co.uk they also sell on ebay, which is sometimes cheaper than their website because they offer free postage. It's more economical to buy the F10 disinfectant in concentrate form and mix it yourself into a spray bottle. You can also find it on Amazon, and on line pet suppliers like Viovet, VetUk etc.

My mother in law text my husband earlier, saying she's been feeling under the weather and turns out she has ringworm. Thinking my son may have caught it from being with her in her hot tub last weekend, and maybe the piggies are not to blame! Still getting them checked out by the vet tomorrow, just to be safe. It'll be my first trip in with them so a little anxious, but some reassurance they are doing well will be nice.

I did order some F10 from Amazon, so the cage has had an all-over clean too.

The time between infection and outbreak is 10-14 days - so the next two weeks are going to be more like a quarantine period - but if your MIL has been feeling under the weather as well then a human transmission route is more likely.

Wishing you all the best and hoping that you and the piggies have escaped it.

The vet gave them both a good check under the special light and could see a tiny patch glowing on the edges of both their ears. We've got a course of intrafungol for them both. Off now to re-read the ringworm thread!

The glow test is not surefire but if in any doubt it is always safer to treat for ringworm promptly rather than not.
