I got a new girl guinea at the weekend to live with my existing two sows. The day after I bought her - indirectly from a breeder, I noticed she has a bald patch on her back. I didn't notice when I got her because she has such lovely long hair. I'm wondering if it could be ringworm as I had a pig with the condition about a year ago. As a precaution I've given her a wash with malaseb but I'm not convinced its a fungal infection because it doesn't seem to be itchy or tender and whilst I have seen some moulting of her fur there is no scurffing or clumps of hair coming out...

Any ideas what it could be/ what I should do?

My only other though is as shes 3 months it could be a healed scar, but doesn't look like scar tissue and all injured guineas I've had before tend to regrow their hair... :-\

Could it be mites? If possible can you take a pic and contact Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas www.gorgeousguineas.com she is a bit of a guinea skin specialist and is helping us with one of our boys, she may be able to help, especially if she has a picture. If you post it on here someone may be able to help, I'm not experienced with mites and skin probs, but many people on here are.

edited to type GG's website correctly!

Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately I'm at work (on lunch!) but will take a picture as soon as I get home tonight. Thanks for the advice! x

Ringworm looks like a red circle on the skin and is very contagious to humans.
As Julie has suggested, post a photo here or email one to GG, She is excellent and will advise what it is and how to treat :)

Its not red at all which is why I'm not sure what it is, but I know only too well how easy it is to catch. When my other guinea had it over a year ago I got 4 patches of my own, and it took a long time to clear up me, the guinea and fully disinfect all the hutches etc and be confident it was all gone... so I'm probably a little paranoid thats what it is again!

ringworm is only red around the outside of the circle, maisy had ringworm not along ago, i used caneston and lavender myrr (gg) and it cleared up in a week or so :)

and i caught it from maisy ::) on maisy it wastn so red more pink :)

I'm sure I'm being really dippy but I can't seem to log into photobucket to add my pics of Feather's bald patch! 98)

Right I think I've figured out the picture thing...

I hope it works...

Looks like mites to me.Take her to a vet for Ivermectin.Do not let him inject this as Ivermectin is now available in topical form(Zeno 450).
