Ringworm again, please help...

Hi everyone. I really need some help and advice please. I posted on here a couple of months ago because during the summer we brought 3 young boy piggies, but it turned out they had ringworm. It took a couple of months to fully treat it, we first used over the counter anti-fungal creams but when they didn't work the vet gave us Itrafungol which worked really well. They were fully cleared of ringworm by the end of August. However, 3 days ago i noticed that they all were showing signs of having it again so we got back to the vets yesterday and again have been given a course of Itrafungol for 2 weeks (with one week break inbetween). I'm so worried that one of our children or other animals are going to catch it too, and i'm gutted that they've got it back again so quickly. I've tried my hardest to keep them as clean as possible, they're in a new hutch since the first outbreak, and they get cleaned out every 2 days. Do any of you know why they could have gotten it again so soon please? The vet also said that Itrafungol can cause problems with their livers/kidneys if given too often so what alternatives are there if they repeatedly get this? I'm feeling so down about this, any advice is really appreciated thanks. xx
 
It sounds like there may have been some spores left somewhere. Don't let the kids touch them until it has cleared up and if possible where dedicated clothes for cleaning them out and wear gloves when handling
F10 is an excellent disinfectant for cleaning out the cage and houses etc.... is that what you are using at moment?
 
I don't know where the spores could have come from. Everything was cleaned with a spray that kills ringworm or binned after the first outbreak. They had a vet check after the Itrafungol course had finished (6 weeks of treatment) and were given the all clear. I then bathed them in Nizoral shampoo before then moving them from their old indoor cage to an outside hutch. I've fenced off their hutch from the children and dogs as best as i can. xx

My piggies had ringworm all summer, it was awful :soz: I even caught it myself :(

I used this to treat the piggies:

Then I bathed them all in manuka honey shampoo and I spent hours scrupping every inch of their house with jeyes fluid.

It eventually cleared up, but did take a few (very stressful) months
 
It's horrible isn't it! I need to buy some F10 as i've read that's good for killing fungal spores, then i can give their hutch a good clean out. I love my piggies so much, they're great little characters and lovely to cuddle, but this constant ringworm/fungal problem is actually making me scared to hold them or go near them. I'm hoping that the Itrafungol will clear this up again and i can disinfect everything, fingers crossed it won't come back... but i thought that last time! :(

Can anyone please give me a link to either Amazon or Ebay for the right F10 disinfectant product please? There seems to be a few types and i'm not sure which to get, thanks. xx

I ordered some F10 last night so hopefully that's winging it's way to me and should arrive in the next day or two. I've also found a dip/shampoo that can be very effective, it's called Imaverol... does anyone have any experience with this please? I'm just looking for alternatives to Itrafungol incase they have repeated outbreaks. xx
 
Well my F10 came today so i'll start using that tomorrow, hopefully i can irradicate any ringworm/fungal spores in their hutch. I spoke to my vet today, she said that Imaverol can be used although again like the Itrafungol it's not something that she would want to use often... but at least we have an alternative if needed.
Are there any milder shampoos that would help to wash away any spores without being too harsh to their skin? I don't want to bath them more than necessary but am desprite to stop this from happening again. How often can you bath piggies please? Fortnightly, monthly, etc? xx
 
Hi! My guinea pigs have had ringworm. My vet recommended Turbinafine. It really helps! I have oral Turbinafine and the cream. You can get it at Kroger ( King Soopers in some states.) They only sell the cream tho. My mother is a RN and says keep giving them oral until it is gone. She says it because it is a fungal infection. They usually sell it online in small bottles.
 
I live in the UK, i've never heard of that before. I'll have to have a look online and read up about it, thanks. xx

Please be aware that the stance of this forum is that all treatments should be recommended by a Vet who has examined the piggies.
@Muscy Mel please do not use any treatment that has not been recommended by your Vet.
 
Thanks VickiA, but i wouldn't give anything to them unless it was cleared by my vet. But it's very helpful to know what works for other people, not all vets are that clued up on small animals so to have options that i can ask about is very helpful.
