A vet gave me 50mg dog Rimadyl tab to divide into quarters(once a day) to give my guinea pig for unexplained pain. I'm worried this is a really high dose. thats 12.5mg?
Is this drug hard on kidney/liver problems?

@Abi_nurse

I haven't got any personal experience with rimadyl (carprofen) in guinea pigs but it is a safe NSAID for rodents. Normal is metacam and in extreme cases of pain (especially terminal conditions, the opiate tramadol).

But as it is rarely prescribed I am not familiar with the normal range of dosage. Please keep in mind that guinea pigs have a much faster metabolism and need comparatively much higher amounts per weight than cats or dogs.

I really need to check this but I’m not at work with an up to date dose formulary. I would however expect a higher dosage as in cats/dogs the dose if much higher than metacam so this may well be right.

Sorry. I can check tomorrow if I can remind myself during my busy shift. If your worried then please call your vet.

Thanks. I found this on Guinea Pig Lynx which had me worried it was a high dose?

Guinea Lynx :: Analgesics

Carprofen (Rimadyl)

  • 4 mg/kg, PO/SQ, q24h, (1* dose is extrapolated from Chinchilla dose and anecdotal usage)

@Abi_nurse

Guinea pig dosages generally tend to be on the high side, but unfortunately this is outside of my own experience.

For the time being please stick with the dosage your vet has prescribed.

They were left overs from something before we discovered the larger kidney in a scan. I'm just wondering if its a high dose as most people seem to be saying 4mg/kg.
