Sorry, this is very long and probably not that interesting, but it makes me feel better and calmer writing it all out as my anxiety is quite high at the moment!

Background: Rey has been at the vets a couple of times recently. She saw our piggy specialist, Ivan, a couple of weeks ago as I was a bit worried about her weight and I thought she’d been drinking a bit more than normal.
Ivan had a good look&feel everywhere, including showing me her back teeth (they’re so weird) and said no lumps, bumps, stones, pain etc and her teeth look great. He did say her kidneys felt a little small which could indicate the start of kidney disease, but it could also just be her anatomy as a dinky pig, so just monitor. Try to get her weight up a little by giving more pellets, and see what happens. She won’t eat more pellets so I’ve been offering a tiny amount of readigrass and alfalfa alongside her regular food but I’m pretty sure she’s never touched any of it!
Anyway, last week she had a day or so where she wasn’t pooing as much as normal, though what she did produce looked perfect. She was back to normal after a couple of days.
This morning she wouldn’t come out of her red bendy tunnel. She was alert in herself but she wouldn’t move. I tried tipping her out and she just turned around and moved further in. I left her and checked about 40 mins later and she haven’t moved. So I (gently) lifted/pulled her out. [Chewie went into that tunnel after/when she had a stroke and BB always used that tunnel when she was feeling poorly or recovering from operations, so I feel a bit squirley about it] She ran perfectly well into another house and glared at me. I checked again about a hour later and she was still there and hadn’t eaten any of her morning veg, not even the stuff right by the house. I got her an appointment (just 30mins later!) to see Djordje. He had a feel around and she did show signs of lower abdominal pain. He thinks she may have a UTI and has prescribed baytril and metacam. Hopefully that does the trick.

Djordje did say she was in lovely condition and he wasn’t too worried about her weight. He commented on how shiny she is and how well behaved she was being, snuggling into my neck while we talked (I was terrified; she’s not a cuddly pig and she’s likely to nip me quite hard when she’s had enough, but I didn’t tell him that!) he loves pigs and thinks they’re the best small animal. Which of course they are.

She wasn’t very well behaved taking her meds when we got home. I don’t know if she just doesn’t like metacam or if she thought one lot of medicine was enough thank you very much! Fingers crossed.

Hi

Baytril is the most foul tasting medication imaginable! Give the metacam first (since it is sweetened wth a little honey, it usually goes down well because as a painkiller it has to be accepted even by pets off their food); then give the bayril and follow it up quickly by the same measure of water or a bit of cucumber (or another treat) to take the taste away. Give a lot of praise for being cooperative, some fuss afterwards and use our piggy whispering tips to assert your authority as a dominant cavy.
Who is the Boss - Your Guinea Pig or You?

If the loss of appetite/weight surpasses 50g, please step in with top up support feeding as needed. Baytril in larger doses can sometimes dampen or even kill the appetite as it impacts on the gut bacteria as well.
First Aid Kit: Easily available non-medication support products for an emergency

All the best for a good recovery!

Thank you, I’ll try the metacam first next time and follow the baytril with cucumber. Piggy whispering is in action and she’s not really that bad, just a bit wriggly!
She’s on 0.2ml of baytril twice a day, the same of metacam. (She weighs 750g)

Her weight loss has been very gradual; she’s lost about 70g over the past year but I will of course keep monitoring it, particularly with the baytril. I did ask the vet about the potential of appetite loss and he said it shouldn’t, so fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed that her meds do the trick, its very worrying when our piggies are not well. Sending Rey lots of healing vibes x

I think we have this medication thing down. Back to my shoulder, paws on my hand, metacam in - baytril in - shove in that cucumber - plenty of kisses!

Rey went back up to over 800g whilst on the meds, but a week after they’ve ended she’s back down to about 750g and looking a bit glum.
She was brighter this morning and there was more poo than there has been in the last couple of days, and in more places, so that’s good. Nevertheless, she has an apt with Djordje tomorrow.

Good luck at the vets Rey. Hope you are soon feeling better.

Typically, once I’d made the appointment she perked up, was producing more poo and put a little bit of weight back on, but we went anyway. Djordje’s exact words were ‘she’s perfect’ :-D. Her heart, lungs, tummy/gut sound perfect, she wasn’t showing any pain during the physical, her insides felt relaxed and exactly as they should and her condition is perfect. So that’s all good. He said if she does have an episode like this again to treat myself with metacam and bring her in if it doesn’t get better in 2-3 days.

That is so typical! But good to hear you have an agreed plan for if it happens again.
