Hello everyone,

Sorry I made another post without clarifying I had already visited the vet. I wanted to ask if any of you had success treating the same eye problem (a retrobulbar abscess) with medication? (Antibiotics)
I saw one post in here and probably it's the only place I've seen one, where the person was successful treating it with antibiotics and I commented on the post, but apparently the post is too old and didn't have any reply. The doctor said surgery is the best option, but I really want to save my piggie's eye and avoid her the pain of surgery. Also, since she started taking the medication the inflammation has reduced a bit and she's eating more, so I don't know what to do.

We’ve saved a few, using just antibiotics, but in most cases enucleation surgery has been required.

We use the antibiotic Azithromycin and also apply viscotears, regularly to the eye, to stop it drying out. Also, anti inflammatory medication, such as Loxicom or Metacam, has been given, twice daily.

Thanks so much for your reply. This gives me hope. I will talk to my vet about the eye drops, she was only prescribed eye drops to heal a scratch in her eye, but not antibiotic eyedrops or anything to hydrate it. She's on Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications now. But will also consult what are the names.

Hope you can get on top of the abscess with medication and surgery isn’t needed for your little girl. Thinking of you both :)
