Junior Guinea Pig
Hi everyone.
One of my boys, Mylo has been in and out of the vets for the past two weeks.
We first noticed his chest somewhat heaving as he breathed, and when held close he had very slight wheezy noises. Went to the vets, and were prescribed baytril and metacam for a presumed uri. Back a few days later when he showed no sign of improvement and got a larger dose of both, as well as metacam twice a day instead of once. Still no improvement a week after our first visit, and he’d started losing weight. Vet did an xray and an ultrasound, thankfully his heart and lungs looked normal. No sign of masses or anything. So the prognosis is an infection that he just can’t shake. Sent back home with metronidazole so we’ve been taking that since Friday. He seemed to be improving, putting on weight, breathing a lot easier and moving more. He’s been eating and pooping fine this whole time.
Then last night I went to check on the pigs and give veg when I noticed he wasn’t moving much. He had no interest in food, and was hunched over. Picked him up since it was time for metacam anyway and noticed he was very wet. His eyes were somewhat half closed and he was drooling a lot from his nose/mouth. He wouldn’t take his medicine or food so we took him up to the emergency vet.
They examined him, his lungs didn’t sound great but it was hard to tell with the noises he was making. His heart seemed okay. The vet was able to check most of his mouth and said it was as she’d expect, though he didn’t let her see the lower left. He was clearly in pain, but she didn’t feel she’d be able to do much and suggested we get the metacam in him and hope it helped. Other than that, just to wait and speak to our vet in the morning, possibly look at a referral.
I’ve been up with him all night, hoping to grab a couple hours sleep now until our vet opens. He’s still very unhappy. Looks like he wants to eat but has a sort of hiccuping motion whenever he tries and just somewhat sneezes/drools. So he’s not managed anything in around 12 hours which worries me massively. Tried syringing his antibiotics and critical care and they just wouldn’t go down. He’s mostly staying in one spot in the cage but has been snuffling in the hay. Whether he ate any I don’t know, but I doubt it.
Just so worried about him and honestly not sure what else I can really do for him at this point. He’s still being affectionate and we’ve had a lot of cuddles tonight. Thanks to anybody that read this jumbled mess. I’ll take any advice or best wishes for Mylo.
