Hi everyone.

One of my boys, Mylo has been in and out of the vets for the past two weeks.
We first noticed his chest somewhat heaving as he breathed, and when held close he had very slight wheezy noises. Went to the vets, and were prescribed baytril and metacam for a presumed uri. Back a few days later when he showed no sign of improvement and got a larger dose of both, as well as metacam twice a day instead of once. Still no improvement a week after our first visit, and he’d started losing weight. Vet did an xray and an ultrasound, thankfully his heart and lungs looked normal. No sign of masses or anything. So the prognosis is an infection that he just can’t shake. Sent back home with metronidazole so we’ve been taking that since Friday. He seemed to be improving, putting on weight, breathing a lot easier and moving more. He’s been eating and pooping fine this whole time.

Then last night I went to check on the pigs and give veg when I noticed he wasn’t moving much. He had no interest in food, and was hunched over. Picked him up since it was time for metacam anyway and noticed he was very wet. His eyes were somewhat half closed and he was drooling a lot from his nose/mouth. He wouldn’t take his medicine or food so we took him up to the emergency vet.
They examined him, his lungs didn’t sound great but it was hard to tell with the noises he was making. His heart seemed okay. The vet was able to check most of his mouth and said it was as she’d expect, though he didn’t let her see the lower left. He was clearly in pain, but she didn’t feel she’d be able to do much and suggested we get the metacam in him and hope it helped. Other than that, just to wait and speak to our vet in the morning, possibly look at a referral.
I’ve been up with him all night, hoping to grab a couple hours sleep now until our vet opens. He’s still very unhappy. Looks like he wants to eat but has a sort of hiccuping motion whenever he tries and just somewhat sneezes/drools. So he’s not managed anything in around 12 hours which worries me massively. Tried syringing his antibiotics and critical care and they just wouldn’t go down. He’s mostly staying in one spot in the cage but has been snuffling in the hay. Whether he ate any I don’t know, but I doubt it.

Just so worried about him and honestly not sure what else I can really do for him at this point. He’s still being affectionate and we’ve had a lot of cuddles tonight. Thanks to anybody that read this jumbled mess. I’ll take any advice or best wishes for Mylo.

I’m so sorry Mylo is poorly. I haven’t got any experience of URI so I’m sending healing vibes your way and a hug to you as I know how stressful it is with a poorly piggy. I hope you can get him in ASAP at the vets. Fingers crossed they can help Mylo.

Thanks, vibes and hugs are greatly appreciated right now. Managed to get him to the vets this morning and he’s been admitted. They’re going to make sure he gets his antibiotics, get him fluids, do syringe feeding and hopefully figure out what’s up. The vet did remark his chest sounds a lot better at least. Relieved he’s being taken care of and crossing my fingers (and toes) for him.

He’s in the best place. It’s good his chest sounds clearer. Hope they can get to the bottom of the problem.

Sending healing vibes and hugs as well. Good to hear that he’s been admitted and is getting the best possible care, you’re doing great. It’s very difficult when you have to let the doctors do their thing and wait, keeping my fingers crossed for Mylo and you.

I am so very sorry and am keeping my fingers very firmly crossed!

Thanks everyone. It’s not looking great. He’s been trying to take his syringe food, but it keeps coming back up. So we’re looking at either something stuck in his throat (hopefully that will soften and he can swallow it) or some sort of abscess relating to his chest infection which seems more likely. He’s still bright and moving around a little, but he’s lost 200g in the past two days and there’s not a lot more that we can really do. He’s still at the vets and they’re still trying to keep him going while he remains fairly bright but don’t think we’re going to get a good outcome for him. I’m hoping with everything in me he turns the corner. Just a waiting game to hear from them how he’s doing this evening. I appreciate all the support more than you know.

Vet just phoned. He’s not doing any better and she’s worried he’s going to aspirate and suffer so putting him to sleep now is really the kindest thing we can do. Going to go up and say our goodbyes. My heart is shattering.

BIG HUGS

I am so sorry. Please keep in mind that everything that could he done for Mylo has been done and that there is
nothing you or your vet have missed.

I am so sorry 😞 sending you big hugs. You really have done everything you can for Mylo and he will have known just how much you loved and cared for him x

Thanks everyone for the thoughts. I’m broken hearted but I know we did everything we could. I’ll make him a post in the rainbow bridge section when I feel up to it. <3
