my guineapig just finished his baytril course and he got better for around a day and now when i pick him up his lungs or something else sound a bit liquidy and then he struggled to breathe in the course of an hour. i don’t really know what to do since in northern ireland the vets only really give guineapigs baytril and don’t specialise in them to do anything else and i don’t want him to die like my other piggy since i wasn’t able to get him treatment. does anyone know what kind of stuff triggers URIs in guineapigs or how i can prevent it since he stays in warm places? the guineapig blankets are also washed with detergent so I'm not sure if it’s that.

I’m sorry your boy is unwell. How long was he on the baytril for? I think the only thing you can do is to get him to the vet and see what they say.

a week, but ive noticed that he only gets it in episodes then it might go away in around 2 hours and every time i go to the vet they all say and give the exact same thing and he eats and drinks really well

Please do take him back to the vet. Ask the vet, if they aren’t specialist, if they could call another vet for advice.

URI is a broad term of bacteria in the respiratory system. Baytril is the go to antibiotic but it depends what bacteria he has as to whether it is the most effective treatment, there are other antibiotics which could be given

i have asked about other stuff we could give him and they honestly just give baytril which I'm pretty sure he’s immune to from how much he’s had it. idek if it’s a respiratory infection since he just flares up out of no where with heavy breathing and strange noises kind of like a hoot?

Only a vet can tell if it’s a respiratory infection by listening to the chest.
I'm not saying this is what is happening in your case but baytril is the go to antibiotic but it doesnt treat everything, sometimes stronger antibiotics are needed and an under treated URI will continue to flare up given the bacteria are not properly killed off so some remain present and cause another problem.

Medical issues always needs to be dealt with first, but
is your hay a good quality dust extracted hay?
do you have any other irritants in the room such as candles, perfumes, air fresheners?
