What are the signs of a respiratory infection that I should look out for? My boy Wilbur is sneezing constantly and there's discharge from his nose so far. I can’t tell if it's a infection starting to happen or if it's just the dust from the hay.

Hi

A respiratory infection in guinea pigs is bacterial and not viral; it is not at all the same thing as a human cold. The main symptoms are raspy or crackly breathing rather than just sneezing.

Can you please specify just how long Wilbur has been sneezing for? Does it coincide with opening a new bag of hay or a change in hay brands or indoors heating coming on?

Here is a list of potential irritants:

If you have any doubt, please see a vet. Before you can diagnose a sensitivity and much more rarely an allergy, you need to exclude a potential infection first, however since environmental problems are much harder to pin down.

He's been sneezing for a few days now, and now that I think about it he does have a crackle type breathing that's been happening. They've been on the same type of hay/brand for months. We just switched to our heater but the sneezing and crackly breathing was happening before that

If you are noticing crackly breathing , then please call your vet today and make an appointment
