Just when Pepper was improving... she came off the antibiotics on Friday after the vet said her lungs sounded clear, but prescribed metacam in case her lungs were inflamed. Her whistly breathing has improved since the metacam but this morning i noticed yellowish discharge from her nose so will be taking her back tuesday morning. (earliest appointment available). My other pig Rexy also still has a crusty eye so will be taking her back to.
As it’s clear the infection isn’t responding to Baytril as they’ve both been on it for a month, what other options would i be looking at?
Has anyone had a similar experience and have the infection respond better to a different antibiotic?

Forgot to mention:
Pepper has put on weight (vet takes it as a good sign) is eating normally and moving around normally
Rexy is the same weight, eating normally, but moving round a little bit less- she is however older so this isn’t alarming me.

Hi!

If the problems are ongoing, then a lab test to test for which antibiotics the bacteria respond to would be best. It is not cheap and will take some days but your vet can then target precisely. On the other hand it could be a secondary complication like a sinusitis or rhinitis. It can happen occasionally. but that is for your vet to decide.

It is however good that your girls have improved noticeably!

Vet said Peppers lungs sounded clear and the wheezing was most likely just coming from her nose/ throat now but Rexys lungs sounded a bit crackly.
She has now given us a 3 week course of Sulfatrim for them both. Fingers crossed it goes away soon! Vet was confident this would work- definitely puts my mind at ease :)
