Dear Fellow Guinea Pig Parents,
I'm seeking your support for an important petition to improve guinea pig quarantine rules in the UK. Currently, guinea pigs entering the UK face a 4-month quarantine period - longer than necessary given their low rabies risk. The conditions also lack proper indoor facilities and hideaways essential for these sensitive pets.
This hits close to home. In 2023, we lost two beloved guinea pigs during and shortly after their quarantine when moving from New York to London. The extended isolation and stress was likely a contributing factor.
The petition calls for:

  • Reducing quarantine from 4 months to 1 month
  • Requiring proper indoor facilities with hideaways
  • Implementing guinea pig-specific welfare standards
You can sign the petition here: Petition: Reduce time & improve conditions for guinea-pigs in quarantine after entering UK
Petition: Reduce time & improve conditions for guinea-pigs in quarantine after entering UK
We urge the Government to revise guinea-pig quarantine from non-EU countries, reducing it from 4 months to 1 due to low rabies risk. We also request indoor facilities with proper hideaways to ensure their comfort and well-being, as current conditions can cause stress and health issues.

Every signature helps create better conditions for these gentle pets. Thank you for your support.
Best regards,

Done. I had no idea that they were subjected to such a long quarantine period
Yeah its a super strange one! If the Guinea Pigs are moving from EU then there is no quarantine (great for the piggies from EU) but for piggies from other countries it feels quite harsh

Also thanks a ton everyone for the support, feeling the community support!

If anyone has recommendations on getting the word out do let me know. I tried contacting a few Guinea Pig rescues and the Animal Welfare Party but had no luck from either side.

Maybe try social media. Regularly post 'stories', reels and picture posts to share your story to gather signatures. I'm sure it will attract a heartfelt response.
