Hi everyone,

I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced this and what they did. I also need to vent a bit.

This year has been terrible for one of my girls. She had started with having a seizure about 9 months ago, was treated for an ear infection and then seemed okay.

About a month later, there was blood in her urine and she was crying when peeing. She was treated for a UTI and was okay for about a week.

It came back about a two weeks later - treated her again for the UTI, and she improved.

Two weeks after that, it came back again. Treated her again.

She was okay for about two months - she then started falling and not being able to walk straight, head tilt. Treated her for another inner ear infection and she improved. She still has a slight head tilt but otherwise okay. This was about two weeks ago.

Last week, the blood in her urine returned. I have yet to receive the results checking for any bacteria to see if the UTI has returned.

The vet suspects it may be sterile cystitis, however - the anti inflammatory (metacam) does not seem to be working. It’s definitely her bladder - when the vet took a urine sample directly from her bladder, there was quite a bit of blood in it.

I am at a loss and I do not know what to do anymore. I do not want to consider money as a problem in this situation, but it is starting to become one. It is expensive but I’m not sure how her quality of life is. She is not herself - constantly chewing on random things because she’s stressed (I.e. she ate a bunch of plastic off a puppy pad - they are no longer being used).

She has also lost over 100g in two weeks - now this could have been from the antibiotics for the ear infection, but she doesn’t seem to be gaining it back. She is eating normally, drinking quite a bit more water than usual. Still squeaking for her veggies.

Just need some input if anyone else has gone though this. It absolutely breaks my heart and the thought of euthanizing her - but the same goes for thinking of her being in constant pain.

Hi

I am ever so sorry. I would suspect sterile cystitis as well, as it is now the most common urinary tract infection in indoors guinea pigs.

You may find this guide here informative and helpful:

You may also find this guide here helpful in terms of appropriate feeding supprt, depending on the nature of any weight loss; when and how to step in.

It is always a bit of a struggle and will take a few weeks to get under control since any glucosamine to help the beleaguered walls of the urinary tract needs time to build up. It is not an instant process to get symptoms under control. Once you hace achieved that you can then fine tune just little maintenance dosage of anti-inflammatory and glucosamine is needed and how much you need to up it with the inevitable flares every few weeks to get them back under control quickly. Sterile cystitis can range from the very mild to the very severe so there is a whole sliding spectrum.

All the best.
