I live in East Yorkshire and my dad says I'm only aloud guinea pigs if they're outside in a new shed when we go into rent... I thought most renting places aren't aloud pets I said and he said that's the reason we aren't getting them atm so our renting options aren't narrowed :( so don't they accept guinea pigs even if they're outside,,,!? If that's the case my wait for guinea pigs might be another couple years,..:'( xx

I have heard of situations where people have been asked to rehome animals or move out even when they are in the garden. But to be fair alot of places dont mind about caged animals, or I personally rent and my agents/landlord dont even know about my lot, I just hide them all if they come round :))

I would do that but to my dad it's just another excuse not to get the piggys:( to 'risk our accommodation' xx

Speak to the landlord and ask. I had to do that once when I wanted to get a hamster and they were fine about it if I kept it in the cage (obviously I said I would *ehem). My friend did the same when she wanted to move into a place with her cat - not only was it fine but they let her install a cat flap as well. Think you just have to speak to them about it.

I agree with Toffeewoffee & AbiS, check with your new landlord first. The animal rule is mainly for dogs who are more likely to make a noise or nuisance than caged animals like guinea pigs.

I'm moving soon and I have thought what if a landlord says no, but generally they say 'no pets' because of cats and dogs. My old landlords had some really bad stories about people who had cats who destroyed the flat. I always tell them guinea pigs are in cages so they wont destroy anything (obv I don't tell them about floor time :P lol)

yes it could narrow your renting options so I think your dad is right to wait. Most tenancy agreements will have a no pets clause in them, when offering a house to rent letting agents offer it as optional but I think the majority of landlords take it on. This could be no pets full stop and this could be no cats and dogs. Only after finding a potential rent would you be in a position to ask. My last landlord allowed me to have the guinea pigs in a flat. However, I rent out a property and have a no pets clause. I would consider small animals such as guinea pigs/buns being kept outside but not indoors.

Yea I'd be keeping them outside so would it be alloud ^^

Not necessarily, it is at the landlords discretion. You would need to ask before signing the tenancy agreement as well otherwise the landlord could deny it and try and keep some of the deposit (some landlords are right gits). I consider myself a reasonable and nice landlord so I'd allow small animals outside but that doesn't mean everyone else would

Ok thnx x

I've always rented with animals. This has varied from just a single hamster, to the extreme where between us, my flatmate and I had 2 dogs, 3 guinea pigs, 2 rabbits, 3 hamsters, 2 mice, 3 terrapins, 3 tortoises, a tank of fish, 3 axolotls, and probably a few more!

Renting has never been a problem. I'm currently renting with a dog, tortoise and 7 house guinea pigs. Landlord is happy, we've been able to provide excellent references, always had our full deposits back etc. despite the animals.

The rented properties I have been in all stated 'no pets', but when I specifically asked about guinea pigs they have never been a problem.

I'm currently living in a rented house with my pigs indoors, my landlord doesn't mind them at all. Hope you are able to find a place that allows pets.

Hi, the "no pet" rule for rentals is usually for larger animals, like cats and dogs. Most landlords are pretty reasonable if you talk to them. They might ask you for an additional deposit, in case of damage. Denying you accommodation because of a 2lbs furry one seems a little silly, don't you think?

I've rented for over 20 years and my family are all four legged. I would not consider going anywhere that they were not welcome BUT they all are impeccably behaved - sadly those who do not look after their pets properly give everyone a bad name. I pride myself that I have lived next door to my landlordsI and they have never even noticed the dogs - barking and destructive dogs are badly reared and cared for dogs, not normal dogs. I find that I have to prove from previous references and talking to the landlords that my animals are good tenants - I have more problems getting past the estate agents who lump everyone into the same box and will say no without even knowing the potential tenant.

I'm in a rented house, I asked for permission and got it no problem, they even gave me permission for the shed to house them in. ;)

We are in a rented house and our landlord is fine. They are kept in the garden which we pretty much have free reign of.
so there is not problem there. I think they are usually just worried if you have bigger pets or ones that are kept in doors. I'm sure a place with a garden will be ok
