I was wondering what everyone's opinion is. My two piggies are very shy and whenever we are nearby they always hide out in their carrot house. I have read that some people recommend removing their hidey when you are at home so they get used to you moving around, but then putting it back when you're not there. I would still be leaving a tunnel and pouch in, so they do have some small places to hide, just not as concealed as the hut. Is this a good idea, or do you think it would set them even further back as they would be even more scared?

I'd personally never remove their houses. They already feel vulnerable enough being prey animals and being in a new environment, taking out their hideys would make them feel so exposed and scared.

How long have you had them? It can take weeks or months for them to feel secure enough to venture out of their houses while you're around

I have only had them for one month, so I am probably being very impatient! Particularly as they are rescue piggies, they are likely to be even more nervous!

I know it's hard, I was so impatient with my pigs, but they'll come around in their own time

One of mine, Toast, took around 6-8 months to fully trust me and come to me freely. She didn't come from a good home though so I imagine that's why. Even now after having them for 14 months, every now and then she still startles easily.

Just keep talking to them and hand feeding/ petting if they'll let you and they'll soon learn you're not a threat and they'll come out :)

try offering food to them while they are in their houses, see if they will take it from your hand. Then after a while make them edge out a little further to take it and go back in. It does take time but you will get there. I would leave their hideys in as you don't want to make them feel anymore vulnerable as others have said. Early days, keep going you WILL get there I promise.
