Remedies for horse fly bites?

I take antihistamines throughout the summer as I react really badly to insect bites.

So you need to keep your hand raised as much as you can and take a antihistamine and ibrupofen. If the swelling doesn't start to go down soon you need to visit your GP. I don't want to scare you but I got cellulitis from a horse fly bite, it was really nasty and I was on antibiotics for a month.

Thanks Yvonne. Ice and ibuprofen seem to be bringing it down a bit!

Get some piriton (antihistamine). It can really help with bringing the swelling down sooner or preventing things swelling up quite as badly if taken immediately.

You can find them in any supermarket and pharmacy since it is an over the counter medication. Have them in your bag with you. Nasty things, horse fly bites! I've had them a few times. :(

Thanks Wiebke. They are such horrible things. Driving us and the horses mad at this time of year 😔

I agree with this 100%.
DH has major reactions to horse fly bites, and I was initially a bit skeptical, but he ended up with cellulitis and in hospital for 24 hours for IV antibiotics (followed by a long course at home).
He took daily antihistamines from then on during the horse fly season.

Luckily, the swelling seems to be going down. Ice and ibuprofen seem to be making a difference. Will definitely keep an eye on it!

I am glad that your hand is a bit better!

However, I'd still recommend to have anti-histamines with you or take them as a precaution if you are regularly in an environment with horse flies. They do thrive in a warmer climate. :(

Oh no - I got 3 bites yesterday. I take hay fever tablets anyway so maybe the antihistamine stopped the swelling. Hope your hand is getting back to normal (or as normal a hand as a gal with a horse can have 😂).

Like the others, I use antihistamines, plus witch hazel spray to kill the itch and stop me scratching it! Scratching makes it much worse

To be honest, if I had a hand swollen that badly, I would get it checked by a doctor just to make sure there's no infection.

Do you like Marmite? I'm sure I heard somewhere that if you eat Marmite the flies don't bite you as they don't like it!

Seriously though, Avon do Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil Spray that was recommended to me by my Pharmacist years ago. She was one of these people that thinks nothing of venturing through the Amazon Rainforests. She used it there and hardly got bitten whereas everyone who was using the stuff with Deet in it was bitten to pieces. The advantage is you also smell nice. I've used it too in the evening when I've been away in the caravan and the midges leave me alone.

Not so keen on the marmite idea… 😂

But well on board with the skin so soft. A few people have mentioned that to me. I’ll get some

Thank you 😊

I've heard it's also a good insect repellant and it does make your skin very soft.
