I have a newborn guinea pig, 5 days old, rejected and pretty much dead when found. I have taken him home and hand fed him semi-skinned goats milk every hour- 2 hours. Yesterday (day 4) I started to hand feed him lettuce blended into goats milk. He has been doing really well often running about and finding different places to burrow. Today I have woken up to a completely different guinea pig. He isn’t moving much, isn’t eating much, just laying down wherever I put him and not moving from there, also he has been making the same clucking/ tutting noise all day. I have phoned the vets and they said there is no point in bringing him in as there isn’t anything they can do. The vets advised me to bring him to his mothers and try to put him on her teet. I have tried this a ffew times and he won’t suckle or drink from her. I also tried to leave him in the cage with her for a bit but he was completely ignored and left shivering from the cold! What should I do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi!

I am very sorry but it sounds your baby may have pneumonia, either from aspirating some fluid, which has gone down the wrong way or from his immune system not being strng enough; especially if he never had the crucial first antibody laden mother's milk (colostrum).
Even babies that are doing seemingly well, can go downhill in a matter of hours; they are unfortunately that fragile. If he is not drinking, then his body is most likely already closing down and he is no longer able to process any nutrition.
All you can do with a rejected or orphan baby is to hope for the best and pray that you can get him through the crucial first weeks. It is also likely that his mother may have rejected him because something more serious underlying was wrong with him. :(

How did you come by your pregnant mother?

Hello,

I am very sorry that your baby has passed away.

Please make sure that your guinea pigs are strictly gender separated so that you do not get any further pregnancies; especially not from piggies whose genetic make-up you don't know anything about.

I’m so sorry your little mite has passed over the bridge. You must be feeling very sad, I’m so sorry 😞 you gave your dedication and love and he will have known how much you cared x
Sleep tight little one 🌈
