I was pleasantly surprised when in Nottcutts (garden and pet centre) today to see signs up saying that they do not sell any pets during the last week before Christmas, to discourage impulse buying of pets as presents. If someone does want to buy one for their children as a surprise, they sell them the cage and accessories along with a certificate / voucher for the pet so that they can come and choose one after Christmas.

But then went to Pets at Home, who don't seem to have anything similar in place, and also listened in amusement to a sales assistant taking a bloke round the store and loading him up with all the accessories he advised they needed for their new guineas - including vitamin C drops, mineral blocks, etc. etc. etc - I really had to resist the urge to say anything!

We don't rehome over the Christmas period either.

I don't think anyone should sell pets in the week leading up to Christmas, I like the Notcutts idea and am not at all surprised by P@H. I would really like to see car stickers say that a Guinea is for life not just for Christmas after all there are lots of them for dogs. What about our special little pets.

I agree but unfortunately they're main concern is profit / sales whereas rescue's main concern is the welfare of the animals. I do think pets at home should do something similar, perhaps they will - but I won't hold my breath!

Not sure if people know this but Pets at home get no profit from selling animals they do it for a third party and this is probably why they don't care about them. They only have the animals there to draw people in so that they can sell their stock and so that when someone does buy a pet they can sell all the accessories to go with it. When they are hiring they do not care what experience of animals you have only how well you can fill a shelf, the looking after the animals bit comes second.

The daft thing is i wonder if any rescues would advertise or put some 'show cages' in of animals and get the profit that way with less hassle for them and more advertising for rescues etc?
