So this morning we brought my guinea pig to the vets (who is over 6 yers old) because she had not been well that day and didn’t seem like herself. She wasn’t eating or drinking and as a result was dehydrated. The vet also informed us that she might have kidney failure. I’ve been trying to feed her critical care almost the entire day but she is refusing to eat it. Is there anything else I could do to get her to eat? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you ❤️

Hi!

I am very sorry.

If your girl refuses to take on any food, from mushed pellets (best soaked in some warm water) or even a little warm water, then her body has sadly started to close down and is no longer able to process any food.

For improvisation tips please see the relevant chapters in our emergency/crisis care guide collection: Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

If your girl is refusing to eat at all, then this guide here will talk you through the whole dying process step by step; especially when you have never been confronted with it before. You will hopefully find it very helpful in making a rather frightening process less scary: A Practical and Sensitive Guide to Dying, Terminal Illness and Euthanasia in Guinea Pigs

Thanks for your help. She did start to eat a little again, but has gone completely limp and we have been told by our vet that she will pass in a couple of hours or overnight. Thank you for the guide ❤️
