this is a question for the mummies and daddies that have pigs with IC.

my della hasn’t been fully diagnosed with this yet but it does seem like a big possibility.. i was wondering what the tell tale signs of IC are and how to go about getting it diagnosed? also is there any treatment?

we watch closely over the girls and i try to always watch della wee when i can (she nearly always wees in the hay loft so each time she runs up there i assume she needs the toilet and go over to watch haha) i watched her wee this afternoon, was milky but no blood etc, however today while feeding veggies della has weed twice, both times no squeaking (obviously this would usually be a sign she was in pain) but its red in colour, is it possible to have a flare up that just causes blood and no pain?

we have also noticed when della does experience bladder problems, its usually when the girls are in season! is this just a coincidence or is there more too it?

would really appreciate anyone’s input but especially people with IC pigs.. phoning vet’s tomorrow, thanks all x

IC is diagnosed through eliminating other bladder conditions such as UTI and stones.
IC is characterised by little to no bacteria in the urine which consequently means that a piggy experiences repeated UTI symptoms but courses of antibiotics do not cure it as it is not a bacterial issue.
There is no cure but it can be managed with pain medication and glucosamine. The diet needs to be checked (although I know you already feed a good diet) but IC tends to be worsened by changes made to the diet but not necessarily the diet itself (although some IC piggies can have particular veggies for example which exacerbate symptoms).

Red colouring does not always mean blood. Porphyrins are a natural dye which can occur at the onset of infections or urinary issues but they may or may not contain blood.

thankyou very much for clearing that up, is there any way i can test the bacteria in her wee myself? she had a scan back in february; no stones. i give her a cystease capsule every day on her veggies.

that’s interesting regarding the diet change, we fed pepper for the first time in a while yesterday! since she was poorly we have slowly been re-introducing their normal veggies (started with coriander, then onto cucumber and now pepper in small amounts) so i wonder if its the re-introduction of pepper that may have caused this?

No you can’t check for bacteria yourself, a vet would need to do it.

Don’t forget some veggies can colour/stain the urine - what colour pepper did you feed her?

ah thats a shame.. so how many potential UTIs but no bacteria before a vet usually diagnoses IC? hope that makes sense!

it was red pepper but i thought if it was from the pepper it would have happened quite quickly after eating it and not the day after? she weed red twice before even having any today..

Theres not a set number, its just that a recurrent pattern of UTI symptoms without antibiotics working
