hi guys,
i have no pictures but found a guinea pig in a different thread from 2018 with what seems to be exactly the same problem! i got my guinea pig out of its cage today to find it had a red lump or growth on the inner part of its eye. i’m taking her to the vet tomorrow but was wondering if anyone has any advice or knows what this could be. i didn’t notice it yesterday so i think it may have developed overnight!

Hi!

Please have your piggy checked for a potential conjunctivitis; this can make the little tear glands prolapse. There are some more unusual conditions but it all depends on a hands-on examination.

Without seeing what is going on, all I can do is guess. But good that you are having your piggy seen promptly. Treatment will happen according to your vet's diagnosis.

hi,
thank you for the quick response! i was just wondering, however, could it be something very serious? (i know that might be hard to answer because i have no pictures). we only lost her companion around 4 weeks ago :(

Hi!

Please take a deep breath. It is very normal that you are jittery but you are not likely to lose your girl. :tu:

Here you go from the other older thread :)

View attachment 140211Two of mine, Squiggle & Tiggy had eye infections/inflammation, they were prescribed either Tiacil or Clinigel eye drops & Loxicom for a week.

this is Tiggy after treatment. Picture was taken the next day.
(although their eyes weren't affected as badly as your little lady's appears to be) Both girls are back to normal now with no problems.

I'd definitely ring the vets today & ask to email photos in, hopefully they'll heal quickly :)
Oh edit... An appointment today is perfect :D xx

The longer eyes are left untreated, the more chance of complications occurring :(
Ask the vet if you can have some Loxicom (painkiller/anti inflammatory) too, as I expect it's painful.

Let us know how you get on. Good luck xx

Here's my quote from a newer thread, it includes pictures :luv:

Any advice on soothing a very bad pea eye?

Eyes need prompt treatment, so a vet visit is recommended for tomorrow if possible.
Any general vet should be ok, it doesn't have to be an exotic vet as eyes are fairly similar no matter what the species.

Healing vibes to your lil piggy xx

If the red patch is at the back of inside of the lower lid, then it is fatty or pea eye; in this case, there is no treatment but it is not a dangerous condition and not at all uncommon in especially older piggies. I've currently got 2-3 pigs with it.

Your description is a bit vague as to the exact location. I took it that your 'lump' was more situated towards the front of the eye.

hi,
i’ve googled what “pea eye” should look like and i don’t believe it’s that. it seems to be more of a growth coming from the front of her eye, closest to her nose. she has eaten breakfast this morning which is always a good sign. she doesn’t seem to bothered by it either but we are probably going to take her to the vet in an hour or two!

UPDATE : sorry it took me so long but after taking Cream to the vet, they figured it was Conjuctivitus although it didn’t look like it from what i had seen on google! she was given some eye drops and after about 4 or 5 days the swelling or mysterious red lump had gone so she is happy and healthy again! thank you so much for your kind messages
