Someone is selling a pig, and it has much too small a cage, not properly taken care of and as I'm talking to them, they're telling me she has little black/brown speckles on her back end and doesn't come off even though they have washed her how many times. I was curious if there are any remedies to mites without having to go to the vet or if the vet is the only option. My heart hurts to think of leaving her to be picked up by someone else that isn't going to take care of her. I'll probably end up with another pig by the end of this week.

I know I read on here that the gorgeous guineas lice and easy shampoo does wonders for this, which I think is considered hay mites/static lice but still interested in what people personally have to say. Having 7 pigs of my own I don't quite want to say yes to the pig and bring her home and then have to deal with how many others getting it as well.

I've not heard of any treatment that is successful for mites that cuts out the visit to the vets, the person selling this animal needs their head tested how can you cram any animal g pig sized into that cage, makes me so mad hope you can get a resolution

I read on here somewhere the Lice and Easy works but was just curious about if it truly did.

I would always take a new Guinea Pig to a vet to get them checked over .

Don't forget to keep her away from any other guinea pigs until she has the all clear too.

I haven't picked her up yet since she has mites, was talking with the person for the most part. The only reason why I asked for without having to go to the vet is because for the last few issues Ive had it hasn't been much help because it isn't an exotic vet. The only exotic vet near me is hours away. I mean don't get me wrong I would definitely do what's best and if going is the only route I have I will definitely do so, was just curious if someone knew of something that definitely did the trick.

I was prescribed invermectin for treatment of mites, it has to be applied once every 2 weeks, you can buy it from pets at home or vet uk though. It doesn't harm Guinea pigs so if you do adopt that guinea pig you could try it and see if it helps. If not then the pig would need to be checked over by a vet.

They look like hay/static mites I have successfully treated mine with Flea or Die shampoo, folow instructions leave on for 15 minutes then rinse thiroughly. You need to bath her again a week later. Please keep her in another room from yours for at least a fortnight as quarantine in case she has fungal or other health issues. Handle her after handling your piggies & observe good hygiene. Fungal is much harder to treat. You don't really know what problems she has so I hope you have funds for vet bills :(

I went through fungal with my two youngest girls, couldn't help but pick them up when stopped at a pet store. There were so many crammed in a tiny place and both had URI's. Took them home got them to the vet to only have to deal with horrible fungal on BOTH for the next 3 weeks or so. Was horrible. Will always always have a cream and malaseb on hand now.

Well you are very brave & kind for taking her on. Check her skin, eyes ears & mouth thoroughly when you go to collect her, as that's usually where fungal starts. Don't bath her straight away, she will be stressed. I would wait at least a week, you can order Flea or Die from Amazon. Most piggies have static mites if you check the rumps of your own you may see some. They come in on hay.I use Timothy hay from the US & mine don't ever get them now. She does not need Ivermectin unless she has mange mites which are under the skin so you can't see them. Please don't treat with spot on or anything like that, mange mites are best treated by a vet :)

It rather looks like fur mites; they look like somebody has run a peppermill over the back end of a guinea pig. Thankfully, they are the least harmful of the skin parasites that a guinea pig can get.
Please quarantine any new guinea pig that is not from a rescue with a mandatory quarantine. it is great that you want to help her.

Here is more information on fur/hay mites with suitable US products; do not use low-dosed cheap broad spectrum shop products; they are likely not to do the trick: Guinea Lynx :: Fur Mites

If you are getting her, I would have her checked by a good vet if you have got access to one, to make sure that otherwise all is well. I would also double check the sex; we have seen too many surprises from free-ads piggies!

If you buy any over the counter treatment please don't buy xenex ultra as I have had a pig have a severe reaction to this, I would take her too if I was you, I did the same thing as I saw a Guinea pig on gumtree living in a hamster cage and she was free to good home and I was worried if someone else had her they would think the hamster cage was suitable and not buy her a proper one, good on you for saving her when are you bringing her home?

I plan on ordering a lice shampoo, thinking lice and easy and then calling my vet to see if they have any reccomendations and when the shampoo comes in pick her up around that time, I spoke with them and they said they would "hold her" for me. They don't seem like bad careless people, just not knowledgeable and don't care to learn.

Yeah I think that's the problem a lot of the time and depending where they got her you never know what advice they've been given. I know a lot of pet shops give rubbish advice, I don't think they would have got her from a rescue because they wouldn't have let them keep her in that cage so more than likely was a pet shop or breeder therefore rubbish advice as they just want rid of the animal and don't care too much where it's going.

Just got off the phone with my vet and they're never much help, it gets under my skin. It simply seems like all they want is to have me spend money through them. I asked what their thoughts on the shampoo was and all I got out of them was "uhh well, it really depends in cases of mites we treat with ivermectin" so I said "but considering static lice also known as hay mites don't feed off the guinea pig it's self, blood wise and all, wouldn't that not help? Or would it?" And the response was being laughed at. As in a way I took being like 'lol why are you even calling if you won't just take what I say and question everything I have to say'.

I hope that it all works out OK! Hay/fur mites are generally comparatively easy to get rid of.
