Hi everyone,

first offI hope it’s ok making a new thread for this, it’s related to my last one but I think different enough that it warrants its own. If not I’ll happily delete this one and follow up in my old one :)

So Edgar is on his 3rd UTI since August. The first one presented with lots of blood in his urine but not other symptoms. We got 10 days of baytril and that sorted him out. Since this infection he intermittently squeaked when pooping (almost exclusively when he was out on my lap - I share an office with them so I’m with them all day and he never did it in his cage)

his next one was in November, this presented with intermittent blood in his urine, and a lot more dilute than the first time but I bought some dipsticks and they showed blood, so we had a phone call with the vet (because of lockdown) and again did 10 days of baytril and this again sorted him out.

this current one presented with lots of bloody urine, and also squeaking when peeing and pooping. This time he got 10 days baytril, metacam, and we had an X-ray done to check his bladder.

the X-ray was totally fine, no sign of anything suspicious. The antibiotics have cleared up the blood in the urine, but he still squeaks (frequently but not all the time) when peeing/pooping. He was off his food for a few days at the start, I think a mix of the infection and the stress of being dragged to the vets multiple times, but is doing better now.

our vet suggested that these UTIs were stress-induced, but apart from that isn’t sure why he keeps getting them. I’m thinking it’s probably not sterile cystitis because the infections respond to antibiotics.

Edgar is a good drinker and they are bed on fleece sewn to bed pads, any wet fleece is removed twice daily. I’ve also bought him some oxbow urinary support tablets although these haven’t arrived yet. He is long haired. It we keep him fairly trim, would giving him a bum wash with an unscented baby wipe a few times a week help?

any ideas about all this? We have a follow up vet appointment after he’s done with these antibiotics, but I’d like to get as much input as possible about how we can prevent another infection.

(here he is, very angry about being given antibiotics)

This isnt something I have direct experience of, but it does sound like a non-bacterial cystitis may be going on- this is often triggered by stress. But first the vet should take bacterial cultures from a urine sample to make sure there isnt an underlying infection that just needs a different antibiotic.
@Wiebke and @furryfriends (TEAS) are both very experienced with managing bladder conditions successfully.

Hi again. My boy had his first UTI couple of weeks ago. But we've been asked to give urine sample to diagnose and then after ATBs finished. That way we knew it was bacterial and it was clear after the ATBs course. I know vets often send samples off if they need better analysis. Maybe something to discuss?

Just a tip with the oxbow urinary, they're very solid and big for piggies to chew so I break them into smaller pieces.

Yes that’s a good point, I’ll bring up culturing at our next appointment.

I am thinking about non-bacterial cystitis, but it always responds so well to antibiotics, the blood clears up after the first couple of doses, so I’m not sure.

Yeah I’m thinking we’ll ask for a culture, I’m a scientist, such a shame I can’t just do it myself 😂

thanks for the advice! They should be arriving today...I hope Edgar likes them!

Possibly a longer course of antibiotics, or a different type of antibiotics, may be the answer then- but I do think the culture tests are the best way forward, so you and the vet know exactly what you are dealing with! I hope you get some answers and your piggy gets some relief from his squeaky wees x
