Please could you advise - is it possible that mites stay in fleeces even after they've been washed? one of our guinea pig has bald patches on her belly and feet, now getting them in the middle of her rosettes. We've treated 3 times with Spot-on over the last 6-9 months as directed by the vet. For a while it started to get better and now it's got worse again. The vet suggested that we throw the hay that we were using out and get a new one the first time. I've stopped giving them a tray of hay to sit/eat in. But they've started to get worse again during Covid. This never seems to affect our other guinea pig. Please could you advise?
Thanks

I don’t know whether they can stay on fleece. My question is did the vet prescribe the spot on or did you buy an over the counter one? What is the name of it exactly? How many rounds of treatment did you do the last time? And is your vet experienced with treating guinea pigs?

And in addition to above
Washing should kill anything on the fleece as long as it is washed hot enough.
Did you disinfect the cage, ideally with a vet grade disinfectant such as f10?
Wooden hideys etc - could they be harbouring something?
Has the vet done any skin scrapes to be able to see exactly what you are dealing with?

Thank you - Rosie was prescribed Xeno-50 mini as she is a small guinea pig. We did two rounds last time (about 6 months ago) and have done a first round last week with enough to do a second round left over. I haven't used a vet grade disinfectant - we have a C&C cage and last time i did take out the correx and give the creases an extra good clean. The fleeces I'm washing at 40degrees - should that be hot enough. i think they shrink at any hotter. The vets haven't done skin scrapes - I'm planning to take her today so will ask then. Our vets have been very good in the past with guinea pigs - though some of the vets there are better with guinea pigs than others!

I'll order some F10 - can this be sprayed on the wooded hideys too? thanks!

I seem to remember xeno should be given in 3 doses to be effective it will say in the instructions in the packet. I would wash the fleece at at least 60 to kill off mites/eggs, hotter would probably better. When my piggies had parasites I washed mine at 90, it did shrink a bit but not a huge amount and was still usable. After I washed it once I went over to using just newspaper with hay on top and changing it everyday to dispose of any parasites/eggs until we were sure they were clear.
I hope you can get on top of this troublesome problem soon.
