Sorry for the several posts they’re all different topics. My guinea pig pepper has been on Baytril for treatment of a uri since Thursday afternoon(now being Monday morning) she hasn’t shown much improvement since. How long should it be until i start to see a big improvement? The vet put her on a week’s course of Baytril. She had been having congested breathing and a runny nose/eyes for about 2 weeks on and off before Thursday, although it didnt get too bad until around Tuesday last week. She’s eating and drinking normally and isn’t lethargic.

Has she been sneezing? Mine has been sneezing every couple minutes and has a runny nose and Baytril didn’t help at all. His situation is pretty similar with him being normal besides that. I’ve been trying different things recommended by the vet but haven’t had any luck yet

Normally you'd see an improvement within 2 or 3 days but it really depends on the pig. What's the dosage you've been prescribed & how much does your piggy weigh? That does seem like quite a short course of antibiotics for what sounds like a fairly nasty URI. Did you and the vet rule out allergies as the cause of this -- things like changing bedding, changing hay, or introducing anything new to the environment around the time the symptoms started?

It will take a few days before it starts to work and then a few more before you see any improvement but 7 days does sound like a fairly short course so you will have to keep a close eye on her and get an increased course if necessary - the last thing you want is for some bacteria to remain as they will start to reproduce after the course finishes and symptoms can return
Allergies will not be considered until there has been no improvement after several courses of antibiotics

Hi, thanks for the replies everyone. The vet told us she seemed to be in very good health and that her lungs didn’t sound too bad although he could definitely hear an infection. She’s on 0.2ml twice a day. She’s stopped hooting and isn’t sneezing as much, the only symptom that hasn’t gone away is the noise when she breathes- i can only hear it when i really listen and it almost sounds like a bit of a squeak? it’s hard to explain.

Yes, her course of antibiotics is due to finish on Thursday and one of her symptoms still won’t go away- the noisy breathing. I can’t hear it unless i listen closely but it is very much still there. She does sneeze quite a bit too. My other guinea pig rexy seems to have lost a bit of weight so i’m worried she might have it as well. We’ll see how this goes...

If she's no longer hooting and the sneezing is less frequent then it does sound like she's improved within the usual time frame for antibiotics to work. I'm assuming her eyes and nose aren't runny anymore either as you mentioned that there's only one remaining symptom. Hopefully that will clear up as you finish the antibiotics -- if not, call up the vets and ask if they think she should have an extended course. It does sound like she's improving though, so fingers crossed it'll keep getting better!

Did she improve?

Did she improve?
Ah yes! as you can see this was a year ago. Both my guinea pigs were on antibiotics from may - august last year! very bad chest infection. pepper sometimes has a little sniffle when it’s cold but apart from that both my pigs recovered and are now (apart from current teeth issues) absolutely fine! ❤️
