New Born Pup
Hi everyone!
So, to give a bit of context: my guinea pig Elias (male, 3 years-old) was diagnosed with gut stasis on June 1st. He was given the medication for gut motility and metacam, and I started to syringe feed him right away. His weight was going up again, which was nice. Unfortunately, I had to be away for 5 days and my flatmate continued to syringe feed him. When I returned, I realized he might have some kind of dental issue: he had lost weight again, he was drooling so much and was clearly having difficulty eating the syringe food (pellets mixed with water; and in the morning I mix in one Oxbow hay tablet for digestive support). I booked an appointment at Vets4Pets the next day, here in London. The vet prescribed antibiotic to prevent infection due to the drooling and we were back there 3 days later (June 17th) so she could check his teeth, and file if necessary. She filed the back teeth and the incisors (under general anesthesia). Unfortunately, the incisors were filed to short... She prescribed cat metacam (0.95 mL every 24 hours) and the med for gut motility, and I continued to syringe feed him. Elias is still not eating by himself, partly due to the top incisors still being too short. I can clearly see that the top incisors are what is preventing him from grabbing food properly, although he has started to nibble on some food whenever I put it in front of him during syringe feeding time. His weight is now stable.
My major concerns are the following:
1) Elias clearly lost appetite, partly due to the antibiotic, I believe. He is now, however, more eager to grab the syringe to eat, so I see this as good sign. I gave him fibreplex and am now giving him some poop soup, made with poos from Matias, his healthy, younger "brother" (he's just 7 months old, such a little ball of energy!). I was just hoping Elias would be a little more interested in food by now? Could he still be in pain? The vet told me to give metacam for 10 days, but I read on here that metacam is relatively safe (?), so I continued to give it to him. We finished yesterday.
2) The drooling. He is still drooling, not as much as before, but still is. I believe short incisors may encourage drooling?
I try to reassure myself that, just like humans, each guinea pig is different and may react differently to treatments and antibiotics, and recovery time may also differ. But most of the time I'm just worried. Maybe someone could give their insight?
Please forgive the long post, and thank you in advance!
