Can anyone recommend a good insurance company to insure guinea pigs? We have sadly lost our one-year-old guinea pig this week, after over £500 worth of vet's bills, and his cagemate died without warning only a few weeks before. They both came from the same breeder, but we have 2 other females pigs from her as well, and now we are worried that they could all have some genetic problem. The one we lost on Friday had heart disease, but also possibly kidney problems. We can't afford that much or more on each of the girls if they turn out to have these problems. Do people insure guinea pigs? Any advice please? It's been a rubbish week.

I insured mine after about twenty years of not paying anything over about £50, two pigs together cost me about £2000 over the course of a few months :( I did a fair amount of looking about but I believe the only company in the UK that does Guinea pig insurance is exotics direct. They're not cheap, but cheaper than a massive bill. Cost depends on the age of the Guinea pig etc, and they won't insure over 4 years old.
Many people have a separate bank account they put money into monthly to use for vet bills, it may work out cheaper in the long run.

Also sorry to hear about your boys, it's rubbish when you can't help them and can't prevent these things, hugs to you

I feel for you having recently spent £1000 only to then have my boy PTS. It's only exotics direct that offer insurance for piggies. I had a look in to it but given the excess and other terms of the insurance I decided I would continue just putting money aside each month to cover any bills

The only UK insurance that will insure guinea pigs is exotics direct.
There is no insurance in non-UK countries. :(

You will have to weigh up whether saving up for a vet fund on a weekly/monthly bases as an integral part of their living cost more effective.

I feel for you! I have had months where I ended up £1000 down the drain with still ongoing treatment and another costly middle-of-night pts for another piggy in the following month, so no much chance to start saving up again straight away....

It's horrible, isn't it. Thank you for your advice. I will look into Exotics Direct. I feel for you too.

Oh no! It's gutting, after all that, you try so hard to help them, spend all that money, and then you lose them. 😔

Thank you. I will check that company out. So hard, to have to go through all that. Our remaining two are only about a year old.

Illness and death are like London buses when you are long term owner or have a number of piggies - you have good months to enjoy your piggies and then you have times where everything happens at once. I call the latter a 'rent a tent in the vet clinic's waiting room' times...

I am very sorry for your experience. Pets are unfortunately an expensive life enrichment. Because they are still considered to be a cheap children's pet for the most part, there is unfortunately not much in the way of insurance and even then, you have to save up in case you come up against one of the uninsurable issues.
Because guinea pigs don't require regular vaccinations, they are not interesting for insurances.
