Hi

We have two guinea pigs, which live indoors. We need to buy them a run so that they can enjoy our lawn, now that the better weather has arrived. I would be grateful for recommendations for a suitable run.

A primary concern is that we have a cat who is an unrepentant hunter. The run must be cat-proof, with no chance of him getting a paw into the run.

Best regards

David

Hi and welcome. If you look through this thread you will find a long post from me which talks about a few of the outdoor runs we've got (sorry I tried to cut and paste the post but couldn't!). https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk...y-of-these-bars-on-cages.126018/#post-1724268
You will probably find the bars on the metal ones are too widely spaced with your cat issue. Could you buy a roll of chicken wire or similar and weave it through the bars to keep your cat out?

The wooden run from rabbithutches.co.uk that I mention has mesh panels which I don't think a cat could fit a paw through.

We have a pop up run which is good for indoor and outdoor and is 150cm diameter. Look on Amazon, easipet fabric pet play pen, ex large. Also great if you have cats as has a zip in net roof and can be pegged into grass, and a Velcro in waterproof floor which you can put fleece on top of for use indoors. I think it was £40. Folds nice and flat and goes behind the sofa.

I recently ordered a folding wooden one from Zooplus - it has smaller mesh and the reviewer says her cat can't get through - had a folding metal one before but had to keep covering all the sides and top with net to stop the cat putting her paws through, so this is far handier. I have the popup one for indoors but wouldn't trust my cat with that on the lawn :lol!: and the piggies are starting to munch through parts of the fabric.

I have a pet cat but she is frightened of my guinea pigs but also have another 4 cats living close by. I couldn't find one suitable that wasn't £80 or something ridiculous. I actually ended up making my own for around £30. I am not very DIY minded but it was really simple to make I got treated wood for outdoors from wickes and chicken wire from tool station. If you are interested in making your own I can take detailed pictures and talk you through the process step by step, just give me a shout.
It was the best way as then I was able to build it the size I wanted and enable it to fold flat for storage in the winter.

At the risk of sounding like some sort of obsessive outside run collector, we have also got that outback run you refer to here. I don't think a cat could get into it. We haven't got a cat but lots visit our garden.
