My cousin went on a family trip yesterday so she brought me her guinea pig to care for while she's away but my boyfriend thinks that the Guinea Pig might be in bad health. She bought it last summer when it was just a couple weeks old.

First of all, her bum looks really swollen. When you hold at it like that, it looks like she has huge hemorrhoids or something. When she walks it touches the floor sometimes but when we touched it to see if there are any small tumours, we found nothing. It's not warm to the touch and she did not seem to be in any pain. It's just big and looks very odd. Also, she seems really big for a guinea pig. Online sites say she should be between 700-900 grams but when we weighed her we found she's 1250 grams or so....
Lastly on her fur there are loose white flecks that don't stick to it so is that mites or lice? I'm attaching two pictures below.

I wouldn't think anything is wrong if my bf hadn't told me anything so I need advice since I'm only supposed to feed and clean her for a few days. She eats well, drinks a lot and makes that happy sound (popcorning?) Is there cause for concern? My cousin's young so she might have not known how to properly care for her.

I had something very similar looking to that with a much loved piggie called George a few years ago. In his case his poos were getting lodged in the skin pouch at the exit to his bottom. The vet lubricated the skin and gradually pulled out quite a large amount of compacted poo and I then had to repeat this at least twice a week. If you do it regularly it's just a small amount and not a problem.

I do urge you to take your pig to the vet and have this seen to as George's skin was quite sore inside and obviously this can lead to an infection. If she's eatign ok that's good but do still have her checked.

I hope it's all ok

I've never felt this stupid in my life lmao, this is tragic. My bf was like ''Your cousin said it's a she but she looks really weird'' so I panicked and I actually came back from the vet.
I go in the office all worried like ''Doctor there's something really wrong with her! Why is her bum so swollen?!''
There was this super awkward pause and then he goes like ''Heavy testicles maybe?''

FML WHY

Well, at least he has a unisex name and got sprayed for the dandruff or whatever it is that he has.

I've never had a boar that looked anything like that! (Except for poor George...)

LMAO - Oh so sorry to laugh cause I bet it was worrying you but that it just the best story ever.

You are such a good person though to take he/she to the vet and have him/her checked out and treated for whatever the skin problem is.

However I guess the question now is 'did your BF mishear what your cousin said about whether piggy was a he/she or has your cousin assumed that he is a sow all this time?'. If so I think this will be an eye opener for your cousin :lol!:

At least his name will not need changing anyway.

Would love to hear the happy end to the story :)

I'm really sorry to hear about George, that sounds like a very painful and distressing experience for such a small animal.
As for the guinea in question he really doesn't seem to be in pain whatsoever so he's just...........................................blessed I guess :sly:

Please, laugh freely. My mum almost pissed herself :td:
I honestly don't know what happened but whatever the case, I'm happy with the twist. What I thought was a sow in serious pain ended up being a healthy, well-endowed () boar :yahoo::yahoo:

LOL! That certainly would be a problem for a sow... however, totally normal boar testicles there!

Actually loling. He must have been proud as punch that those spectacular dangleberries were finally getting some recognition.
"Mmhmmm, I grew them myself"

Bless him. It was good of you to care so much. I've had several boars over the years but I would have been concerned if I'd seen him (even if I'd known he was a him). I've never seen dangleberries that big!

Still laughing! - there have been plenty of people on here who have posted about lumps on their guinea pigs belly - only to be told it's a nipple!

I saw the huge "lumps" on the "sow" and thought oh dear! Then my eyes focused..

:yikes::D

You did absolutely the right thing to be concerned about your cousin's guinea piggie and very conscientious taking 'her' to the vet. Frankly if you have never seen a male bottom before, it's an easy mistake to make. You're not the first person to be confused by a pair of testicles!

But.........I have to thank you for the best laugh ever! My stomach muscles are sore after crying with laughter. One look at the pictures and I just completely cracked up

:lol!: ;)

Agree with Posyrose! Best laugh all day (and its been an odd day!).

I must admit when I saw the first photo I did immediately pray that "she" wasn't being kept with another sow
