I posted yesterday to report that my Boris (5 months) went to the rescue centre and came home with Frisbee, a 4 month old boar who'd spent some time living wild in a field. So excited that B finally had a friend. However, the battle for dominance has been an eye-opener, even after having read everything I could find on this forum. Here's the story so far...
Day One dawned and it was clear they've been having altercations overnight - there was stuff everywhere and Boris had been bitten on the nose. Watching them, it seems that Boris is definitely going for Top Pig status and just wants to hump Frisbee all the time whereas Fris just wants to hide in his tunnel cos he's terrified of everything. I think Fris had probably had enough of Boris's persistence and lashed out.
Lots of 'behaviour' happening this morning and then about mid morning I heard really loud angry squeaking and saw them launch themselves at each other. I rushed in and picked Boris up with a towel. I managed to wedge a strong piece of cardboard into the cage so they had half each, plus a hidey, a pile of hay some grass, dandelions and carrots each so they could both calm down. I rang the rescue centre and Joanne was very reassuring, said I'd done all the right things and that this could be a difficult bonding because they're both teenagers but to take the divider out after about ten minutes and keep an eye on them. Took the divider out and Boris immediately went to find Frisbee, who really wasn't in the mood and after a bit Boris went and sulked in his hidey - possibly Fris had gone for his sore nose again.
It's all very quiet in there now, both in their hideys, and has been most of the day. Little outbursts of rumbling when I've been in to say hello or put some veggies in the cage.
Overall, I have to confess that it's been quite distressing to witness all this, and there's probably plenty more to come. However, it's great to be able to share it and find out so much on this forum - the support is so very much appreciated.
Sorry to ramble...

Bonding is probably one of the most stressing part of keeping guinea pigs. Once it's worked out & they're happy it is very rewarding. I do hope everything works out well in the end.

Thank you Stewybus - they're squaring up again now and all I can do is watch. It's heartbreaking, I just wish they'd sort themselves out soon...

Congratulations on your newly adopted Frisbee! I have some boys from Milhaven too:)
How are your two getting on today?
Do your hideys have 2 entrances for quick escapes? Hope it is going well with the bonding.

Hi Lauraboara, yes, they both have two entrances. Whenever I go near them Frisbee dashes out of his and zooms into the next nearest hiding place, usually Boris's hidey, so the two of them have been swapping places.
Having thought all was sweetness and light last night, I woke to find Boris sleeping out on his own. I've been out in the office next door most of the day, but when I've popped in to see them they've been very quiet and at just sitting opposite ends of the cage.
I'd be so grateful to hear of similar experiences...

My boars tend to get stroppy with eachother they're around 5 months.

They've never had a fight but just get in eachothers faces then it usually ends with Cream jumping at Cookie then Cookie runs off and realises its time to back off! It's strange they never hump in their cage they only do it when theyre on my bed and one time at the vets!

They tend to keep to themselves in their cage but if one is out of the cage the other will be looking for him, they always sleep in their own pigloo's or Cream likes to lay outside on a lump of hay! But on Tuesday I moved their cage out of my room to do vacuuming I came back to their cage to find them cuddling in the same pigloo! Hoping to see this a lot more!

So I wouldn't worry about stroppyness too much unless there's actual fighting involved!

Thanks for posting that - I think I just have this idealised vision of them being bestest piggy friends. It's only Day Two, though, so I mustn't get my hopes up too soon!

No problem! If your boys tooth chatter it's usually not that big of a problem it's just them saying "you're annoying me, go away!"

And I was the same thinking they'd be cuddling all day! It usually takes til their a year old for them to be completely calm lap piggies!
