I've decided to finally get rid of a very old tatty hutch from the bottom of the garden that's been there ages - thinking it's only suitable for the tip but thought I'd add some pics on here just in case anyone can think of a use for it.

I honestly don't think a rescue would want it as too small, and don't want to try freecycle as it's too small for a rabbit and too tatty for anyone really, has had plant pots and all types of wildlife living in there, not bothered cleaning it as always planned to tip it. You never know with freecycle what people are going to use it for - can't risk some silly person putting 2 rabbits in there or something.

I don't drive and Dad does not want to take it to a sanctuary.

It's a 4 foot hutch - roof hinges broken off and would need new inside wood on roof and a new base but I don't think it's worth it.

Will take to the tip later in the week.

I'm located near to Stourbridge in the Midlands but I doubt anyone would want it it's in such a state (but I've seen worse on ebay occasionally!)

I will not be offended by 'just tip it comments' :)) (I am just a hoarder and hate throwing anything outrolleyes)

So does everyone reading this think it's best to go to the tip with it?

It doesn't look that bad to me, I've just bought 3 hutches in much worse condition than your one but my mum's partner is a carpenter and can fix it up, someone might see it as a project.

The size isn't a problem for a couple of guinea-pigs or a small breed of rabbit (Netherland Dwarf for instance). Just advertise it on Friday Ad or a tenner or on Freecycle and state the size of animal that should go in there, how many would comfortably live in there etc.

:) You never know unless you try.

you could have one piggie in there or a small rabbit. There must be someone who could use it?

I wouldn't throw that, it looks in pretty good condition, much better condition than ours was in till a few months back.

Ok thanks will hold onto it for time being, could freecycle it.

To be honest don't want any money for it so if anyone knows of a rescue in the Midlands who would be able to use it - I can clean it up a bit but can't fix the roof. I guess it could also be used in a shed as a open nest area? I think it needs a new base board too - the plastic covered boards lift out and are not in good condition but it would not be too hard to slot a new base in.

My main problem is I can't drive so it would need collecting, at the mo it's at the end of the garden and not covered as I'm short on storage space - could put a poundland bbq cover over it maybe.

Anyway if anyone knows of any Midlands rescues/sancturies who could use it or if anyone could use it for rescue animals let me know:)

I hate throwing anything out!

i dont think its that bad either, i feel sure a rescue could fix it and use it, advertise it for free on preloved or some where, good luck!

I wouldn't suggest throwing it away either, I took a hutch to the tip today that was like 100 times worse and falling apart, that one still looks quite sturdy in the photo. Always best to recycle what you can!

I'd think it was just fine for a couple of guinea pigs. I wouldn't put a rabbit in it, it's too small, there isn't enough height. I had two dwarf breed rabbits before I started with guinea pigs and they were absolutely giant. I guess if you donate it to a nearby rescue you wouldn't run the risk of that happening!

Its ok, my Polo came with a hutch worse than this and i managed to clean it up. Only his was completly cakes in compacted poo on the bottom :)>>> . He wasnt looked after well. I cleaned it up and did some fixing and it was fine. Looks better than his. I wish i was closer, i'd pick it up for my polo and chuck his.

Aww wish you did live closer as you could of had the hutch.

Hoping someone Midlands based might want it, have mentioned it on my facebook too. Know of a few rescues but transport is an issue.

Am sure it will find a home - be good if it's with someone handy who can fix it up and make it nice for 1-2 guineas or as a open hutch in a shed set up:)

sorry but dump it - I carried home a rescued hideaway for our outdoor run which looked in good condition only to open the lid and the hinge and some of the lid came away I was so glad my bunnies hadn't yet tried to use it.
bunnies want to nibble the wood and old wood could break away and give them splinters, the wildlife could have left all sorts of lurgies. - go on dump it. you can do it.
or have a toastie bonfire, invite some friends and put out a bucket for pennies for the local animal shelter. (my daughters a clutterer).
Best wishes

You could try Fat Fluffs in Solihull, they're a rabbit rescue, or RSPCA Walsall, as they're completely run by volunteers and don;t have a centre, so one of the fosterers might want it.

Hi Alison, how about donating it to Hopper Haven rabbit & guinea pig rescue in Redditch. All of the rabbits there live in mahoosive great big outdoor runs and the hutches are only in the runs as a sleeping base.

I don't think they use hutches for the piggies; most of them were indoors in great big herds when I visited this summer.

It's a great place full of happy healthy rabbits and guinea pigs!
