Hi I recently lost one of my sows, her sister remains with me fit and well. I have the opportunity of rehoming 4 more sows. They are: 2 sisters who gave birth a month ago. 1 of these sisters had boars so were separated the other sister had 2 sows which remain with her.

So now to the question where to put them all. The sister who had boars and has been spearated from them seems to be having a go at her sister with the sows. Shall I try to put all the new pigs and my existing pig together eventually or is that asking too much. Alternativley I was thinking of putting my existing pig with the lone sister. And keeping mum and babies together.

Any suggestions greatly received. I have had experience of keeping pigs for a long time but never introducing so many pigs at once.

Hi Jam,

I would take it slowly. Girls will still have a highly dominant sow and there will always be one at the bottom of the group. So maybe allow all pigs to have playtime together at first and see how they get along.

I had four sows Flora, Fleur, Amber and Pearl and I took in another three teddy sows Elora, Leia and Lyra and put them all together in a 10x2 C&C they got on for the most part but Leia and Lyra were eventually rejected by the group, god mites and now live seperately. I am going to try them with 2 other sows I now have Goldmoon and Esme.

All sows are different though, your lot may be fine, I have Fleur and Leia who will scrap for dominance if need be! I've had more trouble with my sows than my boars!

Good luck with it!

I would give them playtime as suggested and see who gets on with who. I have 10 piggies, 8 of them are sows. I have 6 sows and a boar together and the other 2 sows with the other boar as I have 2 sows that are very dominant and therefore wouldnt tolerate each other so they have to live apart. The 6 that live together get on well as there is only one dominant sow in the group so the others just do as they're told :))
Good luck :)

Just wanted to add, I agree that girls can be so much trouble! It's all about personalities of course, some will be dominant characters while some will be happy to be bottom of the group. I am hoping my new boys will be better behaved than some of my girls have been. :))

Louise (Sunshine&Twinkle) has given you good advice, couldn't have put it any better myself.

Thanks for that good idea. I also have the option of getting a mature neutered boar maybe he caould sort them all out or maybe he would just be fed up of the women! what do you think

A neutered male is usually a good peace keeper - but he won't take sides in a struggle for dominance; it's just the daily squabbling that goes down.

You have to decide whether you want to tough it out will all girls or keep them in two groups. What you can't do, is take one or the other out and put them back together later, because they whole sorting out in the group will start afresh.
