Hi everyone, i have a 3 year old boy who has every now and then starts making strange rattled noises like his little nose is blocked, i took him to the vets and they said his chest is clear and his heart sounds fine. But the noise has carried on, it’s not all the time, and it seems he will do a sneeze and it will stop. I'm worried he might have an allergy to the hay? He is eating and drinking as normal and has no other signs that could point to a URI which is what i was originally worried it might be! does anyone else have this problem? i don’t know if he is just sticking his head in the hay too much abs it’s blocking his little airways i worry so much about them!

It could be irritation in his airways - piggies have narrow airways so any obstruction can be heard.
It would be best to look to change your brand of hay to one which is dust extracted

Thankyou! i have just been to the pet store to get some new hay for him! does it take a few days for their airway to clear? also his bedding is woodshavings which he has had since i got him as a baby, would you recommend changing to fleece at all?

He will sneeze out any irritation.

It might be beneficial to change bedding if he is particularly sensitive about it but it’s a personal choice. I do use wood shavings when I can’t get my preferred option of aubiose but i always ensure it is fully covered with hay

thankyou for your advice, i will probably keep to woodshavings for now as i never have really had much of a problem, but hopefully he will get on better with the new hay! He has just lost his brother so i’m very paranoid about everything at the moment!

I’m sorry for your loss.
Hopefully a less dusty hay will help, but please do have him checked by a vet if you are concerned.
